Arthur Shelby the owner of a farm in Kentucky has gotten into deep debt. His debt situation has forced him into the position of having to sell some of his slaves. Mr. Shelby and his wife Emily have good relationships with their slaves. They try to show kindness as well as affection to these men and women who work on their farm. The two slaves that Mr. Shelby thinks about selling are Uncle Tom and Eliza’s son Harry. Uncle Tom is a middle aged man whose wife and children work on the farm with him. He is described as being a man who is a long-suffering, brave, head strong in his faith Christian man. He is a hard worker who stands up for what he believes. Harry is the son of Eliza. Eliza is Mrs. Shelby’s maid who is described as being a bright and a beautiful, brilliant slave. St. Clare’s wife goes back on her husband’s promise and sells Tom to Simon Legree. Simon Legree can be characterized as an evil, vicious man from a Louisiana plantation. He has a strong hatred against the slaves. Legree begins to show a strong dislike for Tom due his refusal to whip a fellow slave. Instead Simon turns and beats Tom cruelly and is determined to crush Tom’s trust in God. Tom never refuses to stop reading his Bible or praying. This book was written in the 1850’s and had an huge impact on the civil war. The main characters in this story were Mr. Shelby, Mrs. Shelby, Tom, Harry, and Eliza. Mr. Shelby Decided to sell Tom and Harry. These men were loyal to Mr. Shelby, but he needed the money. When Eliza, Toms mom heard about this she decided to make a run for it with her son to Canada.
In the novel, uncle Tom has a total of three masters, namely Shelby, St. Clare and Legree. Although they are the masters of Tom, but they have different personalities, and the same point. His first master, Shelby, was portrayed as a "benevolent" slave owner and a traditional southern gentleman. Although he and his wife treated their slaves are very friendly, but when Shelby faces a debt and lose its field plight, he decided to name a few slaves to the slave traders to raise much-needed funds. He can not give up the privileged life for a slave he preferred, in his world of thought good slave and his personal accessories, is his personal trading items, it is difficult to change the class nature.

When he was a kid, his family would hide runaway slaves in their Delaware county farmhouse. From a young age, Garrett knew that slavery was cruel. One time Garrett’s family’s black servant was kidnapped. The servant was almost forced back into slavery (Thomas Garrett). This moment changed Thomas’s life forever, as he noted this event as the time in which we wanted to devote his life to the abolitionist movement.
He returned to his home after being beaten by white people that were angry he was working with them. He informed his Master of what happened, who went to seek help from the authorities. The fact that his owner went to ask for help meant that he care about his slave, but once he was told there was no help the owner dropped the issue. The slave owner allowing his slave to be almost beaten to death and not pursing the matter is not a just person. A respectable person would fight against injustice and not succumb to it.
Tom Robinson is an example of a “mockingbird,” he is accused of a false accusation, mainly because he is a black man. Tom eventually convinces two female slaves to escape, but is beat to death soon after. The two escaped slaves end up telling their story to Mr. Shelby who the happen to end up on the same ship. It is then revealed that two slaves on the ship are related to Eliza and George and end up travelling to Canada, eventually being reunited with their whole family. Mr. Shelby returns home without Tom, devastated, he soon after grants all of his slaves freedom.

At the beginning of this novel, the writer shows the difference between the men and women. Mr. Shelby and Mrs. Shelby have different opinions on the slavery. Mrs. Shelby has more directly view on the slavery, she though it was bad to buy and sell salves. Slaves are people not goods. And Mr. Shelby didn't as steadfast as his wife.

In “Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ there are many heroic qualities, but there is not one person who is a real hero. Many characters showed heroic behavior in this tale. I want you to note that even Stowe who was a black man does not behave as a black person, but instead, he showed a heroic model of behavior that should be appreciated by black and white people as well. And of course, Tom who presented more than a black hero, he was the author of transcending race.
