And he accomplishes this once again proving his strength in battle. In conclusion Beowulf is so powerful that he can enjoy his glory. This quote also show another trait of an epic hero which is the “fatal flaw.”
Beowulf’s courage is displayed by the first time he appears when he is introduced as “the man whose name was known for courage” (340-341). Beowulf had to cross the sea to defeat Grendel, who was considered one of the “reavers from hell” (162). When he fights Grendel he is not afraid in any way. It was clear that “Grendel would have killed more if wise God and man 's courage had not forestalled that fate” (Verney, 27). He displays his courage twice more when he is fearless and accepts to fight Grendel’s mother, and later the dragon.
What makes Beowulf an epic hero? Well, first, Beowulf is the Prince of the Geats, he's a strong warrior who is said to have the strength of 30 men in each hand. Beowulf also possesses the ability to breathe underwater, he is a great warrior in his lands and has earn glory by winning many fights. Although, having inhumane strength and winning many fights does not make you a hero; a hero is a person who can overcome adversities for the sake of others. With this in mind, Beowulf has many outstanding achievements that certainly makes him qualify as a hero.
Odysseus' Journey Sailing around every corner of the world, Odysseus shows off his heroic abilities as he battles monsters and makes decisive decisions in The Odyssey. The epic poem which contains the story of Odysseus was written by Homer called, The Odyssey. The this epic poem, Homer talks about Odysseus' journey across the world as he tries to find his way home to Ithaca. However, as he was cursed by the gods, he faces many obstacles such as fighting monsters. In the end, Odysseus shows that he's a hero by being brave, fighting through the gods' curse, and never giving up on your goals just like the modern day hero, Bethany Hamilton.

If we take Beowulf and compare him to the Anglo-Saxon ideal hero, Beowulf fills all the necessary requirements but, when compared to modern day standards, Beowulf doesn’t quite make the cut. Even though he’s out numbered, he takes his chances by being courageous to defeat these sea monsters (559). Another trait is Beowulf’s strength that helps him become a hero. Beowulf has “hands that [move] with thirty men’s strength” (380). Like a superhero, strength is also important for a native hero. Beowulf battles monsters like Grendel who triumph his size and devour men who nobly fought in battle.

Beowulf is a thug because he only seeks fame, treasure, and glory. In his epic story, Beowulf is a warrior king who has proven to possess the battle-hardened personality of an epic conqueror. Yet, through acts of lethal skill and incredible bravery he has maintained a durable reputation and his sense of royal duty.

An Anglo-Saxon Hero Over centuries, there has been a lot over different kind of superheroes that have been created. One of these heroes have been called Beowulf. Although Beowulf doesn’t show much of a Modern Day hero, he shows characteristics of an Anglo-Saxon hero. Beowulf shows Anglo-Saxon characteristics by showing us that he has bravery/courage, that he has loyalty to his lord/Lord, and that he had strength.
