Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 to Elizabeth Dickens and John Dickens in Portsmouth, a city on the South Coast of England. Dickens was the second child born out of eight children (Wilson 18). John Dickens worked in the Navy and his job resulted in the family having to move wherever the employer wanted them to. As a result, Dickens’ childhood involved no stability (Bloom 12). In 1822 the Dickens family moved to a poor neighborhood in London named Camden Town. John Dickens had a serious spending problem and was arrested for debt and sent to prison in February 1824, when Charles was twelve years old. Dickens was forced to leave school and started working in a dirty, rat infested house, called Warren’s Blacking Factory (“Charles Dickens …show more content…

Even though he never successfully became one, his love for theatre and acting stayed with him, leading him to perform and produce plays (Neill 21). These plays soon evolved into his public reading tours from which he had become immensely famous for worldwide (Bloom 32). In 1830, eighteen-year old Dickens met and fell in love with a banker’s daughter, Maria Beadnell (“Charles Dickens Biography”). Suddenly when life was going well for Dickens, Maria’s parents decided that they did not approve of the relationship and felt that Dickens was too young. In May 1833, they ended their relationship (Wilson 22). After being rejected by Maria and her family, Dickens put all his effort into his writing and his first story and, A Dinner at Poplar Walk, was published (Neill 27). Dickens wanted “a memorable way of identifying the sketches as his. He finally picked a nickname… One of his favorite characters in Goldsmith’s Vicar of Wakefield was called Moses. Moses became Boses, which became Boz” (“The Work of Charles Dickens”). In 1836 a collection of the essays named Sketches by Boz were published. Not long after, Dickens fell in love with, and soon, married Catherine Hogarth. They had ten children together
