After all of the abuse she has taken from her father, she knows exactly what he could do to her if she does not comply. In order for others to realize how desperate she is, they need to understand the facts that were brought to the table in court and begin to see her side of the story, in other words, show her compassion. As well, their mother is dead and their father is not concerned.

Mayella is distinguished from benevolence since compassionate individuals feel bad for those who are suffering,“ Compassion can be thought of as a mental state or an orientation towards suffering (your own or others’) (Jazaieri). Mayella’s inability to elope with her dad due to the time period and the fact that she's a gentlewoman makes compassionate individuals feel more empathetic for her. Women did not work backside then, so they had nowhere to rotate.

Mayella never learned to sympathize for her and her own home life, which is sorrowful because “I [the author] find it also helps renew one’s optimism as it reminds us we are not alone in these practices [compassion practices]. Many others are choosing to acknowledge suffering (their own and others’) and wish to see the relief of suffering” (Jazaieri). First, the need for compassion presents itself in difficult ways. Because of the poor manner in which some people are raised, their life tends to be increasingly difficult. During Tom Robinson’s testimony, Scout concludes, “It came to me that Mayella Ewell must have been the loneliest person in the world” (218). This quote does not only show that Scout thinks Mayella’s lack of a social life makes her lonely, but that she recognizes that no one is advocating

Atticus shows how not only is he defending Tom because he knows he is innocent, but he is saying how the action would literally goes against his moral conscience. Atticus shows compassion because he is choosing to see equality in others and how Tom Robinson is no less of a man because of the color of his skin. Even someone like Tom Robinson admitted that he had felt sorry for Mayella.
Although Mayella has clearly lied in court, she was only doing the wrong thing because she had to. Mayella still deserves compassion because of how she has been treated her entire life. Irina Yugay, an author who has written many articles about self-development for Mindvalley, developed the idea that “True compassion goes beyond the understanding of another person’s suffering… compassion literally means to “suffer together” or “co-suffering.”
Although due to being a poor, uneducated woman whom is treated like an object, Mayella is not a powerful character. For 19 years of Mayella’s life she has been
Mayella’s family is wrong for using Tom Robinson for their own well-being to cover up their mistakes. Bob Ewell scares Mayella away from saying the truth about the situation because he will hurt her if she does not lie. Mayella is caught in a Lie when she says “No, I don’t recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me.” (Lee 188) Mayella stutters while on trial saying that Tom did not hit her but then quickly changes her story that he did.
