Titus Smith Mrs. Lawson English 10 11 January 2023 Who is to blame? Mayella Ewell had no evidence to prove Tom was guilty, but on Tom's side, there was specific evidence that proves he is innocent. The story of, ¨To Kill a Mocking Bird¨ by Harper Lee, is about a little girl living through the experiences of a court case between a local family daughter Mayella Ewell, and a black man Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was accused by Mayella of rape when he came to the Ewell house to help her. Mayella invited Tom inside to help her and considering Tom Robinson was a black man, the community already did not treat him well. So Tom tries to get on Mayella´s good side by helping her with some tasks. While Tom was helping Mayella with some chores she accused Tom of …show more content…
Mayella accused Tom of rape, which was proven false but the jury decided to choose the voice of a white girl over a black man, which was common during this period of time. The jury then found Tom Robinson guilty, then sentenced Tom to prison. Some may say that Tom Robinson was at fault for entering the Ewell household but Mayella asked tom to come inside, and help her with some tasks which then started the accusations of Tom Raping Maylla Ewell. Tom only helped Mayella because he was black and he wanted to stay on her good side which unfortunately did not happen. Mayella spoke against Tom which caused the jury to find him guilty. Mayella was white so the jury believed her more than Tom, and the obvious evidence that was given. The community of Maycomb was responsible for the imprisonment of Tom Robinson. This just shows how the color of your skin affected how people saw and treated them during this time period. Luckily today’s society strongly pushes for equality for all people which is what was the problem during this specific time period. Times have changed for the better and some things have changed for the
THE INTRODUCTION Good afternoon my name is Brooke Sauer, and it is my pleasure to represent the State of Maycomb and to serve as a prosecutor on this crucial day. On August 26, 1936, the defendant didn’t try the best he could to convince the judge that Tom Robinson was innocent. At the end of the conclusion of the case, and after you heard all the evidence, we are confident that you will return a verdict of guilty on the three charges of failing to give all he could to give Tom Robinson his freedom.
In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell. He is well known for being a Christian man, but Mr. Ewell claims he saw him raping his daughter. I believe Tom Robinson is innocent because of the Ewell family history, lack of evidence, and he has a disability that causes a problem with the testimony. The Ewell family is nowhere near perfect. Mr. Bob Ewell is known for his violent actions and words.
Tom Robinson is trying to do the right thing by helping out this lady by the name of Mayella Ewell. Tom was not wanting anything bad to happen, but unfortunately, Mayella tempted Tom to kiss her, so Tom did everyone found out about it and was mad because white women are not supposed to kiss black men. Bob Ewell Found out about it and beat Mayella then blamed it on Tom to get him in trouble because he is black. Tom Robinson is not at fault. Mayella Ewell is taking advantage of the situation and the community.
Guilty Without Surprise In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Tom Robinson, a black man, was wrongly accused and convicted of raping Mayella Ewell. There are clues and evidence that the time in history of when it occurred, racial hatred, and other clues found in the novel predicts the final verdict. In the 1930s racial tension was all around and especially in the southern town of Maycomb, Alabama. Lee sends the reader a message of what was ahead when he describes the jury being made up of all white men from out of town.
The main characters aren’t the only ones who contribute to the innocent perspective of Maycomb. Dill, the best friend of both Scout and Jem uses his emotions and past experiences to relate to the hatred black people like Tom Robinson face on a daily basis. During the Tom Robinson trial, Dill gets upset over the way Tom is treated by Mr. Gilmer: “This was as much as I heard of Mr. Gilmer’s cross examination, because Jem made me take DIll out. For some reason DIll had started crying and couldn’t stop; quietly at first, then his sobs were heard by several people in the balcony” (Lee 265). Dill later tells us that he didn’t appreciate Mr. Gilmer’s attitude toward Tom Robinson.
Tom Robinson tried to run away because he knew it was wrong, but the Ewell Family did not want to put shame on his family if anyone found out about Mayella’s incident. While Tom was in testimony he mentioned something that changed everything, “She reached up an’ kissed me ‘side of th’ face. She says she never kissed a grown man before an’ she might as well kiss a n*****. She says what her papa do to her don’t count… I (Tom Robinson) say Miss Mayella lemme outa here
Not an old Uncle, but a strong young Negro man. No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterwards.”(Lee 272). Therefore, Atticus proves to the court with the evidence that Tom was not Guilty and Mayella Ewell tried to kiss Tom, and when Bob Ewell saw this he beat her and blamed it on Tom Robinson. “Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levellers, and in our courts all men are created equal” (Lee 273-274). Instead the court does not want people to hate them so they say that Tom was guilty.
Mayella Ewell accuses an African American, Tom Robinson, of raping her, and she goes on trial against Tom. This trial is motivated by race, and whose word the judges trust more. Mayella knows that every white person is trusted more than an
The book “To Kill A Mockingbird” was written by “Harper Lee”. In this book there are families that live in Macomb County with the neighbors within the County making judgements on each family, besides a man named “Atticus Finch”, which he is a lawyer. Atticus had two children, a girl named Scout or Jean Louise Finch, and a boy named Jem or Jeremy Atticus Finch. So there is a trial going on and Atticus was chosen to defend an African American, which everyone is disliking him for, because he is going to actually try to defend him. The man he is defending is named “Tom Robinson” and he is on trial for being accused of rape by Mr.Ewell.
The worst case scenario after getting convicted of a crime you didn't even commit would be having your whole community pit against you leaving you with no way out. This is how it was for Mr. Tom Robinson In the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Tom was convicted of a crime that he didn't commit and didn't even have a chance of winning due to the racism afoot. The events that transpired towards Tom Robinson was the fault of the community surrounding him;
People tend to believe that trial by jury is the best way to keep the trial completely fair to both parties involved. In some cases, though, it is the opposite of that. One of these cases is in To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In the trial, Tom Robinson, a black man, was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, the daughter of a white family. Tom’s attorney, Atticus, was able to prove that Tom was innocent, but the verdict was that Tom was guilty.
Then some people thought that Tom was innocent but the judge decided to make Tom go to prison. In the book it said that Mayella hugged and kissed Tom on the cheek. From this I can infer that Mayella is desperate and can get away with this because Tom Robinson is a black person. This reminds me of a couple southern movies I’ve watched where black people are always the first to suspect because of their color. Tom Robinson on trial for his life said Bob Ewell yelled “whore I’ll kill you” when he saw Mayella kiss Tom from the window.
Mayella feels guilty after lying under oath in court. Mayella lied about Tom Robinson raping her because she doesn't want her dad to beat her up if she tells the truth. PARTIES Members of the jury, the state will review the evidence against Mayella Ewell who let her greed influence her decision to lie under oath. While her father Bob Ewell forced her to lie about the case so he wouldn't be
On the day of Tom Robinson’s trial in the courtroom, Tom Robinson received a guilty verdict. Tom Robinson received a guilty verdict because he is a black man, a “Negroe” and black people can’t be trusted, according to the society. People filled the courtroom for Tom Robinson’s trial. Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white young women, Mayella Ewell who was 19 years of age. The judge was judge Taylor.
Tom was accused of raping a white woman who was Mayella Ewell, Mayella said he raped her while he was helping her with chores. She later on tells the readers that it was false allegations. The reason why she didn 't tell the truth at her first trial was because, Mayella was afraid of being embarrassed because she kissed a black male. She rather have an innocent man get charged with a crime than that. “However, Robinson was transferred from the state prison to Maycomb 's county jail on Saturday, two days before he stood trial on Monday, and Atticus had to defend him against a lynch mob”.
