The theme of The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald is that the upper class tend to participate in actions that are commonly seen as dishonest, unfaithful, or sketchy. Characters like Nick, Gatsby, Tom and George have twisted views on their own reality due to unfaithfulness and dishonesty. Nick was constantly lied to in the story, for example, Gatsby lied to him about where he got his money. Lies, similar to the one above, gave Nick some twisted views on the reality of his friendship. Gatsby had a twisted view on love due to Daisy marrying Tom right after he left for the war, rather than waiting for him. Tom cared more about his affair with Myrtle than his own wife. Neither Tom nor Daisy truly wanted to be in the relationship. George had his life all mixed up not knowing that Myrtle is being unfaithful to him. These instances of dishonesty from all of these characters against each other result in their own twisted realities due to unfaithfulness and dishonesty. …show more content…
Gatsby is not the only one with twisted views as a result of unfaithfulness. Myrtle, George’s wife, is cheating on George with Tom in the book made clear here, “Wilson? He thinks she goes to see her sister in New York. He 's so dumb he doesn 't know he 's alive" (26). George suspects the cheating, but never truly discovers what is going on before she dies. Tom lied to George as well in order to keep his affair secret. He then ends up saving himself and killing Gatsby by blaming Myrtle 's death on Gatsby in the quote, ”He ran over Myrtle like you 'd run over a dog and never even stopped his car" (178). He explains this here, “There was nothing I could say, except the one unutterable fact that it wasn 't true” (178). Over time, the consequences begin to take effect on George and his mental health goes downhill due to the shadieness of the upper class. He goes as far as locking his wife up in a closet, “‘I 've got my wife locked in up there,’” (136), because his faith in Myrtle becomes weak from her sneaking around
George is a selfless but clueless person who barely has a penny to his name. Tom, Nick and Myrtle travel to the city to the apartment that Tom and Myrtle keep their affair private. Myrtle's sister Catherine comes and eventually the whole group becomes extremely drunk and incapable of coming to reality. Later on Myrtle keeps talking about Daisy and how Tom should just dump her but Tom breaks her nose and tells her to never say Daisy's name ever again. Even though Tom is having an affair this shows that he does still care very deeply about
The Great Gatsby demonstrates the human nature of dissatisfaction through Gatsby’s struggle to become his ideal man, the frequent changing location of characters, and through Tom and Daisy’s broken marriage. The Great Gatsby is told from the perspective of Nick Carraway, a man from a rich, well-established family, searching for purpose and excitement in life through the bond business in New York City. There, he met his extravagantly rich and mysterious neighbor Jay Gatsby, who
Myrtle is not just unsatisfied with Wilson but it is also the life that he can’t provide for her. Myrtle wants desperately to live the life that Daisy lives with the big house, the elegant dresses, and the money but she can’t because her husband can’t provide that for her, and that is the reason Myrtle decides to have an affair with Tom because she gets to live another life with him that she is in love with. We often hear about Tom and his multiple affairs throughout the book, but are slightly unclear to the reason he cheats on Daisy or why he is unsatisfied. In chapter 2 during the party at the apartment with Myrtle, Nick is told by Myrtle’s sister, Catherine, that “Neither of them (Tom or Myrtle) could stand the person they are married to” (Fitzgerald, 33) In chapter 7 during the Mason 2 confrontation between Gatsby and Tom we hear Tom say “The trouble is sometimes she gets foolish ideas in her head and doesn’t know what she’s doing.” (Fitzgerald, 131) and that may be the reason he doesn’t always enjoy their relationship, because he doesn’t always agree with her and her
Daisy was decepting Tom, who had no idea of the affair: although, Tom was decepting Daisy as well. Daisy had suspicion that Tom was having an affair. Tom was having an affair with a woman named Myrtle. Myrtle was married too. Tom and Daisy used their wealth to stay happy.
Her motivation to do this is because she wants people to think she is rich just like Daisy’s motivation. The outcome of her having an affair makes her an unfaithful wife to her husband. Finally, Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson are the characters in the novel that put on untruthful identity for them to cover their mistakes, and their motivations show what kind of
The actions Tom takes near the end of the story show how hypocritical Tom really is. For some reason, Tom is irritated that Gatsby and Daisy seem to have feelings for each other, but his affair with Myrtle is completely fine with him. To Tom, there is nothing wrong with him cheating on Daisy, but Daisy wanting to be with Gatsby is a horrid thing, even
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel that depicts the American Dream; however, the American Dream cannot be established without running over a few people in the process. Gatsby the protagonist of the novel is known to deceive others and himself; however, his lies are not meant to hurt anyone. Gatsby is lost in his desire to be rich and have Daisy’s love, and in his desire forgets about how his actions may harm others. In addition, Gatsby only wanted to be more than his parents who were “shiftless and unsuccessful farm people” (98). Gatsby’s deception goes as far as fabricating who he is, his financial standing in the past; including how he makes his money, lying to Daisy, and allowing others to tell rumors about himself.
His feelings towards Gatsby were negative and full of hate, so he set the target on him when he told Wilson that it was a yellow car who had killed his wife and that he was a friend of the person who owned it. Which also leads to the death of George Wilson since it drives him to insanity and sets him on a mission to go and find that yellow car which didn’t take him that long. Since Tom was the real lover of Myrtle. He was the one driving the yellow car earlier
In the novel, The Great Gatsby, by F Scott Fitzgerald, the wealthiest people want to be wealthier and achieve The American Dream. People use others to get ahead and lie to keep secrets hidden, and deceit to get what they want. The use of deceit and lying completely obliterate and corrupt the American Dream. People might use others to get ahead to fulfill their dream using deceit; which is not the proper way to fulfill the American Dream. Gatsby wants to make a positive impression on Nick, since he wants to take advantage of him to get to Daisy once again, “His smile understood you just so far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you just as you would like to believe in yourself and assured you that it had precisely the impression of
Honesty’s Effects Honesty can be a major factor determining one’s future. A criminal’s sentence is almost solely based on honesty. A family’s relationship is often built on a foundation of honesty. In the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street, and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, the theme of honesty affects the characters mostly negatively but also occasionally positively through the lies and truths they tell and the secrets they hide.
Both tom Buchanan and George Wilson are two vastly different people but are alike in the most unusual ways. They are the only two characters in the book to use violence; both say they “love” Myrtle and both fight for their women only when they are about to lose them. That is where the similarities cease. Tom is the man who cheats on his wife daisy, with George 's wife Myrtle, and then proceeds to slap her when she would not stop speaking Daisy 's name. George, on the other hand, is a passionate and faithful husband to Myrtle and is crushed to learn that she was cheating on him so much so that he assassinates Gatsby whom he thinks was cheating with myrtle and murdered to get rid of the evidence of his adultery.
That fellow had it coming to him. He threw dust in your eyes just like he did in Daisys, but he was a though one. He ran over Myrtle like you’d run over a dog and never even stopped his car” Tom Know that it was actually daisy drivning the car; not Gatsby , but he told wilson that it was Gatsby so that he wouldnt loose Daisy, not beacuse he loved Diasy but becsue he didnt want to loose conrol over his life. Beause of his actions Gatsby was murdderd, we see that selfhisly lying, caused pain and suffering for more people that it would have if the truth was
Tom’s altercation with Myrtle accentuates his hypocrisy and lack of self-control; while he doesn’t feel guilty for cheating on Daisy with Myrtle, he feels that he has the right to maintain his authority over Myrtle. In this same scene, Myrtle, who is also drunk, draws attention to the negative aspects of her personality.
If one is honest, they are to be free of deceit and untruthfulness; sincere. The quality of being honest is honesty. Although characters in The Great Gatsby are quite sincere, they fall short in the possession of honesty. The Great Gatsby is a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which depicts how American life was during the Roaring Twenties.
Knowing that Daisy is the true reason behind Myrtle 's death tom did not want to put her in harm 's way because she was his wife and person he wanted to spend his life with. Tom could not bare to go through what george was going through so he lied to protect his love, Daisy. Love was not the only motivator for action, there was also money. Money was a motivator for action for many characters throughout this novel, but the person most driven by money was the Great Gatsby himself. James Gatsby, or Jay Gatz was not wealthy growing up like every other person he surrounded himself with.
