In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, characters have very distinct identities that develop throughout the book and many inferences are needed to understand the characters. One example of this is Daisy Buchanan. Daisy Buchanan cares greatly about wealth and is a very careless person. Throughout the novel, many of her decisions are due to her greed and carelessness, even though those decisions may not be the best decisions for her.

F. Scott Fitzgerald has a way of applying indirect characterization into his novels in order to enhance how he would like a character to be interpreted, especially in his 1925 novel The Great Gatsby. Take for example, two major characters in the story, Nick Carraway of Minnesota who moved to New York in order to get into the bond business and Tom Buchanan a wealthy man living in East Egg with his wife Daisy. It is evident that Fitzgerald would want readers to look at Nick as an honest man and a bystander or observer of the world going on around him. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel that tells the story of love affairs, the american dream, and the battle between old money versus new money. The main problem of the novel is the fight for Daisy’s heart. Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan, and their love is fading away. Tom is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, while later on Daisy is having an affair also with Jay Gatsby. The Buchanans come from old money, while Gatsby comes from new money. Old money is inherited wealth that has been passed down by numerous generations, and those with old money have more subtle morals and ideals. New money is money made by one’s self and is more extravagant. Tom and Myrtle’s dinner party versus Gatsby’s party is a significant comparison throughout the story in that they are foils to each other, give a deeper understanding of Tom’s and Gatsby’s character, and the ideal of intimacy in parties.

First, all the people in The Great Gatsby thought that the money they had could bring them the true happiness they wanted. Tom Buchanan was the worst of all though and always thought his money could get them out of any problem. He shows this when he says, "And what's more, I love Daisy too. Once in awhile I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time"(Fitzgerald 140). When he says this, he thinks the cheating he does is fine. He thought daisy would never leave him no matter what horrible things he did because she needs the money to live the life she has always cherished. This betrays him because she finds love in Gatsby and she can still live the wealthy life she wanted.

Carelessness: Failure to give sufficient attention to avoiding harm or errors; negligence. Being careless is a poor quality that, unfortunately, many people possess. Obviously, every single person has committed an act of carelessness. It is natural for a human to do so. Seldom does carelessness result in a good outcome. When the act seems to be a recurring event, that is when severe action needs to take place.

Tom may have gone to a good college but he has no workplace experience and his polo career isn't going to be going anywhere due to his body size and his skill. Throughout the story Daisy has been lying about who she loved when she knew that she was still in love with “ Great Gatsby” and that showed when daisy read that letter, she was hysterically crying, it showed that she still cared but she didn't want to put herself out there. Myrtle was a “gold-digger”, but she also believed that he would genuinely love her and pick her over Daisy, even though Tom gave no indication of doing so. Like Daisy, breathed out wealth, Myrtle had breathed out vitality and sensuality, hoping for Tom to chose her as his love and for him to give her riches and luxury.

Greed and love, in most cases go hand in hand. People will sometimes become jealous when a loved one show affection or chooses someone else over themselves.
