My essential oil journey began when I realized how horrible I felt all the time. I felt constantly exhausted, moody, bloated, and was prone to headaches. After going to the doctor a few times and repeatedly getting blood tests done with no answers, I didn’t know where to turn. My doctor couldn’t figure out why I was so tired all the time, even though I was sleeping up to 11 hours a night. Finally, I took matters into my own hands, and begin researching my symptoms and looking into alternative healing methods. Everything I researched led me to trying essential oils. However, not many people understand the many benefits of using essential oils, and consider them “phony” or “witchcraft”. Though there are hundreds of different oils, a few are the most widely used. Lavender essential oil is made of the flowers on lavender plants, and is often dubbed the “swiss army knife” of essential oils. It is mainly used to aid with sleep, but is also excellent for speeding up the healing process of cuts, scrapes, burns, and rash (Group para 5). Peppermint essential oil is made of peppermint leaves and is well known for its ability to relieve headaches, cramps, and inflammation (Palmer para 4). According to Dr. Josh Axe, peppermint oil even increases the brain’s oxygen concentration, resulting in higher energy levels. Lemon essential oil consists of fresh ground up lemon rinds, and is known as a “detox oil”. When ingested, it aids in weight loss, can clear a bladder infection or UTI, and helps relieve constipation. Rose essential oil is one of the most expensive oils you can possibly buy, as it takes 22 pounds of rose petals to distill a 5 ml bottle of oil.
