A Web of Lies In 1692 the Salem Witch Trials began. Later in 1953 a play was written called The Crucible. The Crucible was about a group of young girls who some of their neighbors of witchcraft. Another term for this is McCarthyism . McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence. So what does The Crucible and McCarthyism have in common? Throughout the course, many people are being accused of witchcraft. To be exact it was Tituba and the girls claim to have seen a total of 15 people with the devil. Not want to be certain whether or not this is true. Salem brings Reverend Hale in to determine whether or not the accusations being made are true or not. Danforth believes that the only way to prove with witchcraft is what is with the witch or the victim. He said “Who may possibly be witness to it? The witch in the victim. None other. Now we cannot hope the witch will accuse herself granted ? This is the platform he used to get his position as chairman of the Senate committee also known as capital HUAC. People were getting so scared of the House of Representatives on un-American activities committee he ramped up his investigation of possible communist in the US. Influential celebrities were partially targeted for example Mr. Kazan a well-known Hollywood director testify before the capital HUAC on January 4, 1952. He returned three months later, tonight people he believe were communist. How can we believe that any of the people being named as suspected coming this is true. McCarthy’s list had narrowed down to 57 names. Then a couple weeks later the listed changed to 81 people. It changed once more to zero
