Coming of age is a young person's transition from childhood to adulthood. When a person is coming of age, they mature. Coming of age is shown by the two main characters in Marigolds by Eugenia Collier and Dead End by Rudolfo Anaya. In Marigolds, Lizabeth heard her parents having a conversation about how they are poor and the gender roles are being reversed when it comes to bringing in money for the family. Her father cries because he is embarrassed and this situation made Lizbeth mature.
Authors often use their main character’s journey to highlight a character coming of age while learning something along the way. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger is one case in which the main character goes on a coming of age journey. In the story The Catcher in the Holden is a 17 year-old telling the reader about his 16 year-old self. In the story Holden in dealing with the loss of his younger brother Allie as well as his parents not being very present in his life. The story shows Holden’s physical journey; from Pencey Prep to the carousel in central park, as well as his emotional one; which lands him in a mental hospital.
I grew up in a single parent household, my mother who struggled to take care of me, instilled the prize of an education. Therefore, I always knew I wanted to go to college. However, what career path I wanted to take was not clear until I was sitting in my 8th grade Science class. That day in class the biography of Ms. Henrietta Lacks and the HeLa cell line was introduced. The story of Ms. Lacks sparked a fire within me, and I knew from that very moment, I had found something that had my interest at heart.
When we first are introduced to Mr. Darcy his character is portrayed as being a gentleman or at least this is how Mr. Darcy saw himself as being. He changes noticeably as we get further into the story where he starts to show his true self in the middle and end of the novel. Back in the 1800's being known as a gentleman was more then being a wealthy landowner who was born into the position because of his family name. When people were able to become wealthy on their own, the term of “gentleman” started to become a characteristic that no amount of money could by. Being a gentleman was being generous in spirit, having wisdom and loyalty, and being kind.
My childhood initiated a desire to help prevent and mitigate injury or illness; this soon flourished into an interest in the health care field. To help narrow my choices I explored as many science courses as I could. Talking with health care professionals and reading nursing textbooks I found in my aunt’s house piqued my interest in the nursing field and patient care. From there, I completed a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course which further solidified my decision. Now, I am fully invested in becoming a nurse.
During my visit to Oak Crest Village, I had the pleasure of interviewing a retired nurse. To avoid releasing too much personal information, I will refer to my interviewee as Mrs. B. Mrs. B is a 76 years old female born in 1939 right here in the state of Maryland. She started her nursing education through a diploma program at Mercy Hospital. Mrs. B stated that her nursing program was on the job training. She spent little time in the classroom and the rest was all hands on training completed during patient care.
After studying myself and discovering my several interests, skills and personal characteristics, I have narrowed down my career choice to being a Physician’s Assistant. I know for a fact that I am attending Central Michigan University and going to take part in their Physician’s Assistant certification program. I believe that this career is the best fit for me for many reasons, such as, I know how to deal with people when problems arise, I don’t get bothered by blood or needles and that is a much needed requirement going into the medical field, also throughout my life I have taken health very seriously, and I have dealt with several injuries myself, playing sports as actively as I do, this just means I know how to sympathize with the pain others feel. In this career, I would be working in either a hospital or a doctor’s office, the environment would be consistently busy if I worked in a hospital but slow if I worked in a doctor’s office. As children mature, they are exposed to many new environments and ideas that help them to form new perspectives on the world. These new perspectives cause children to grow into better adults. Sometimes, children have to be exposed to the harsh environments of the real world in order to gain new ideas and adapt. Coming-of-age involves recognizing different perspectives.
Ever since high school, I knew I wanted to work in the pathology field. I thought I wanted to be a pathologist. I talked to the career counselors at my school and expressed my interest. Fortunately for me, I was contacted not much after about an internship at Montefiore Medical Center. I would come to learn that Montefiore Medical Center is the teaching hospital of Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Ever since grade school, I was passionate about working in the field of medicine, and science. I enjoyed anatomy, medical spelling and terminology, and reading about the healthcare industry. Because of my passion for healthcare, I decided to to attend Health Sciences High. There, I was given the best opportunities, such as, medical internships and college health courses. My plans and goals had turned me into a mature young adult.
Overall in my opinion the central reason Darcy changed his way of viewing and treating others was Elizabeth's doing. Elizabeth's harsh judging characteristic forced Darcy to change his ways if he ever wanted to form a relationship with Elizabeth. I can't see a difference in Mr. Bingleys and Mr. Darcy's relationship as they have always been best friends until the end. However Darcy and Elizabeth's relationship changed completely from the beginning to the end of the book to them despising one another to eventually them falling in love. The relationship between Mr. Wickham and Mr. Darcy they both opposed each other through the story because of Mr. Wickham trying to marry Darcy's sister for her money.

Ever since I was young I've always desired helping people. By watching my siblings grow up with different health issues, I've experienced the pain family faces when faced with medical situations. I've known that no matter what field I go into I would like to help people, which is why I've leaned toward the medical; more specifically, medicine. When stating medicine, I mean more along the lines of oral radiology, so I could help discover problems relating to the mouth and throat. During a class meeting in my third year of medical school, we were handed our personal statements from our medical school application to remind us how far we have come. It was a cringe worthy moment as a lot of us realized we were no longer the wide eyed idealist who wanted to save the world.
