Have you ever been through something traumatic or so life changing that you have doubt the truthness of your faith? Throughout Night, Elie Wiesel, the author shows several instances of his loss of religion throughout the book. Wiesel demonstrates his loss of faith through the experiences he has while in the Nazi concentration camps. Wiesel had many traumatic experiences while being held captive in the concentration camps. Those included his refusal to recite the Kaddish prayer for the dead.

In the book Night by Elie Wiesel is about his story of surviving the Holocaust. The Germans took everything the Jews had. The Germans took away their pride, family, and all of their possessions. The one thing that they couldn’t take away was their faith, or so the Jews thought.
Religion. A strong word for some and an everyday term for others. To Eliezer Wiesel religion meant everything, at least that’s how it was prior to the holocaust. While Wiesel was at the appalling concentration camp his faith for God began to dwindle with every reprehensible event Eliezer was included in. While dwelling upon the relationship that Wiesel had with God throughout the novel Night I have come to the conclusion that Wiesel's experience at Auschwitz has stripped him of his faith for the lord.
Elie Wiesel was a young, religious man. During the Holocaust (1941-1945),Elie lost many things he held close to him, including his religion. As a result, of his experiences during the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel changes from a religious, sensitive young man to a spiritually dead, unemotional man. Elie was young, and religious. Elie's faith was very important to him, it was one of few things he held dear to him.

Wiesel and other Jews in the concentration camps had many warning of what was to come, especially from the previous survivors of the Nazi camps. In fact, the new arrivals, when they arrived in camp, were warned right away, by some older men, “‘You’ve had done better to have hanged yourselves where you were than come here. Didn’t you know what was in store for you at Auschwitz?... Do you see that chimney over there? …
According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, faith is “belief and trust in God”(“Faith.”). This faith permeated young Elie Wiesel’s life before he and his family were sent to concentration camps during the Holocaust, and is an idea that is omnipresent throughout his novel, Night. As the novel opens, we see how absolutely devoted young Wiesel is to studying the Jewish religion. His belief in an omnipotent, benevolent God is unconditional, and he cannot imagine life without this divine power. He is eager, optimistic, and he even deviates from his father's recommendation by remaining in the synagogue after the others leave and he finds Moshe the Beadle to guide him in his studies.

As the memoir opens we learn that he was 15 during ww2 and that him and his father were put into a concentration camp. The holocaust is among the most gruesome genocides to this day. On the flip side, this makes it a great time period to observe how faithful individuals can stay, in the most troublesome situations imaginable. In Night, by Elie Wiesel, the author details his own experience in Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. Throughout the story, it is evident that many individuals in the camps desired that religion and faith would come to their rescue. Despite Elie’s religious background, due to the horrors the holocaust is famous for today, his own relationship with god, and his own Jewish identity became rather foggy.
Belief and Faith is a “double-edged sword” to the jews, it cuts both ways. It keeps them alive, and at the same time makes them oblivious, and leads to their suffering. Over time, Elie’s belief in god, diminishes and eventually he questions God’s existence extensively and at point, Elie is infuriated that even though they are being tormented and enslaved, the Jews will still pray to god, and thank him, “If god did exist, why would he let u go through all the pain and suffering (33). This is a major point in the ongoing theme of faith and belief, because for once he is infuriated with the thought of religion in a time of suffering. Throughout the book, with the nazis ultimate goal is to break the jews and make dehumanize them and if anything, their goal is take and diminish their belief.
At this point in Night, Elie is slowly starting to question his faith in humanity. Spoken in chapter three after seeing and experiencing so many cruel things, he is losing his trust in God and in people. When they had first arrived at Birkenau, women and men were separated into two different groups. Following his father, Elie had come face to face with the crematories(machines where people were burned alive). Upon seeing the crematories, Elie had spoken the first part of the quote, revealing his deteriorating faith and disbelief.
The Holocaust affects Jews in a way that seems unimaginable, and most of these effects seem to have been universal experiences; however, in the matter of faith, Jews in the concentration camp described in Elie Wiesel’s Night are affected differently and at different rates. The main character, Elie, loses his faith quickly after the sights he witnesses (as well as many others); other Jews hold on much longer and still pray in the face of total destruction. In the beginning, all of the Jews are more or less equally faithful in their God and religion.
When these people were being treated in such malicious ways, they started to believe that God wasn’t really there for them. They felt as if He wasn 't there to protect them. Sometimes, they started to rebel against their own religion and turn to their worst enemies for faith. Throughout Elie’s memoir, Night, Elie shows that many people, including himself, lost faith during their stay at the concentration camps. Many other victims of the concentration camps lived to see such tragedies that they began to lose hope in God, as well as he did.
Elie Wiesel is not only a talented author but a survivor of the holocaust who documented his horrific experiences in his memoir “Night”. In the beginning of the book Elie Wiesel was one of the most religious people in his town of Saghet who had a dream of living a monastic life. However, as a result of the harrowing injustices he endured he continuously lost faith in his religion. Within the book the reader is reminded again and again that when extreme adversity is experienced, faith is often lost.
