The descriptive passage above taken from, How the other Half Lives by Jacob A. Riis, demonstrates the isolation of the Chinese community from the rest of New York. Riis uses figurative language such as hyperbole, metaphor, and quotation, as well as other literary devices, to depict the Chinaman as an embodiment of Chinatown itself, where the cultural aspects are portrayed through the man and his doings. The descriptive passage I wrote as an imitation demonstrates how the eyes take in factual information which is then distorted by perception and outside influential factors. I used the same types of figurative language to depict vision as an embodiment of truth as well as trickery. The concept is displayed through the eyes and what they see.
Sinclair perceived insensibility as a blessing in a time where life was hard and people had to work a lot. From reading this passage, I believe that insensibility is not a blessing because people need to be able to able to be emotionally affected. In my essay I will be discussing the uses of insensibility in the story with linking it to how it goes with my beliefs on how Sinclair portrayed this as a blessing. The definition of insensibility is the inability to be moved emotionally by something or it could be the inability to feel emotionally.

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins, is a dystopian book about Katniss, the face of the rebellion, who joins her friends and allies to lead a revolution against the Capitol and to save her boy friend Peeta. Katniss Everdeen, Finnick Odair, and Gale Hawthorne are in district 13 and take orders from President, Coin. They are going on their mission to rebel against the Capitol and kill their enemy, President Coriolanus Snow. In the end Katniss saves Peeta and continues her rebellion, but she kills President, Coin instead of President, Snow after she realises that they both are equally evil.
In the novel the Running Man the author, Michael Bauer, captures the experiences of a marginalised character, Tom Leyton. The main characters of this novel are Joseph and Tom Leyton. The author reveals what occurred to a Vietnam war veteran, Tom Leyton after the Vietnam war, as well as how he was excluded from society because he had post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Tom was shut out from society because of his illness. The author represents this through isolation, marginalisation and experiences of torment in society.

In The Road, Cormac McCarthy uses figurative language, to demonstrate the difference in the people’s decisions and values when compared to the real world. The survivors of the apocalypse, including the father all had to undergo a series of radical changes in order to adapt and survive in the new world. When the father enters the house, where the people are kept for food, not only does he see naked people both male and female but also a man with his leg cut off. McCarthy writes, “On the mattress lay a man with his legs gone to the hip and stumps of them blackened and burnt” (McCarthy 110).

In the story "Marigolds" by Eugenia Collier there are several figurative language sentences and symbols that have meaning to the overall theme of the story. "Everything was suddenly out of tune, like a broken accordion." (Collier 11) This means that Lizabeth is explaining everything she is going through and how her life and emotions are. She uses an accordion to describe this because an accordion is a fun and upbeat instrument and a "broken accordion" is the complete opposite.
Throughout the book, Edward Bloor uses figurative language to help describe vivid parts in the novel. For instance, “The ice was forming too rapidly in the new grove; the coatings on the trees were too thick. The loud cracking sound of trees splitting of branches like amputated limbs, or splitting in two like they’d been pole-axed, hung horribly in the frozen night air. We were losing”(225). The figurative language that Edward Bloor uses above, helps you paint the scene in your mind.
Once these characters are in the woods working on accomplishing their goals, they each face challenges that set them back. For example, Red is stopped by the wolf and later eaten, Jack is attacked by the giant, Cinderella is internally struggling with how to tell the prince who she truly is, and the Baker and his wife lose the cow. These challenges they face throughout their journey through the “woods”, all symbolize the obstacles we face everyday when we are working towards our ambitions. To go along with the setbacks, we also watch Red, Cinderella, and the Baker and his wife get lost in the “woods”. This issue of getting lost correlates with the idea that we get distracted or lost along the way while trying to achieve what we wish for.
