To be completely honest, I was hesitant to start this book due to its theme of racism and how as a black woman, it made me slightly uncomfortable to think of this topic by free will. Incidentally, I’m more than glad to have seen past that aspect because, in the end, I was able to read a timeless classic. The Secret Life of Bees brings delightful characters to life, by giving each their own memorable and lovable personality to bring to the table. My favourite character by far was August, the eldest of the trio of sisters. Her calm and gentle demeanor allows the people around her to open up, like how sunflowers bloom as soon as sunlight is in sight. The wisdom she gives others is a gift that few possess and is something that I wish I had myself. The narration …show more content…
Tree frogs alone make you wish for earplugs.” (Kidd, p.173.) Lily’s tone in this passage screams teenage sarcasm. It displays that she is young and playful, which most kids are at fourteen. Lily’s narration brings heart to the story and demonstrates the author’s strong ability to write for different age groups, and realistically depicting them. Plotwise, this tale is a captivating mystery that I found incredibly hard to put down. Continuously, I found myself at the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I was invested to the point of crying throughout an entire chapter, due to a character’s death being so beautifully written. The language that the author uses is so mesmerizing, that I have saved a couple of her quotes to remember. “Someone who thinks death is the scariest thing doesn't know a thing about life.”(Kidd, p.2.) This quote reveals just how hard Lily’s life has been so far. Children her age don’t usually think of life like this. This quote in itself shows that Lily’s journey to find love was definitely a struggle, but had the biggest payoff in the end. A notable con that I found was that certain scenes could be seen as

When Sue Monk Kidd, the author of “The Secret Life of Bees” wrote this book, you can tell she really put thought into creating all the characters and what their personalities would be like. Each and every one of the characters has an astonishing personality but out of all of them, I think my favorite would have to be August Boatwright. August Boatwright, carries so much knowledge around, she has an amazing personality, she’s kind caring, non-judgemental, and is so smart. In the time the story takes place, it was very rare that Women owned businesses, much less black women-
Justice Paper “Justice is the bread of nations; they are always famishing for it” (Geary 187). In my book The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd many characters want to have justice in their lives, and want to be treated justly. There are two main characters in my book. Their names are Lily, and Rosaleen.
The Secret Life of Bees was written in 1964, in South Carolina. The Main Character of the novel is Lily. Background on Lily is that her mother, Deborah, has passed and her father, T-Ray, is very abusive towards Lily. Rosaleen takes care of Lily ever since her mother passed. Lily is also very in the dark about what is happening around her.
The secret life of bees is a coming of age story that has lots of character growth and conflicts within it. The story has many interesting parts, and shows racism through ways many people never knew about. The book has lots of other pieces to it as well that make it come together nicely. The story follows a young girl named Lily Owens who kills her mother (named Deborah Owens) when she was little.
“A wonderful novel about mothers and daughters and the transcendent power of love” (Connie May Fowler). This quote reflects the novel, The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd because the protagonist in the story, Lily Owens, her mother have died when she was four years old and she didn’t feel loved by her abusive father, T. Ray Owens, until she met the Boatwrights family with the housekeeper, Rosaleen, and stayed with them. The Boatwrights family are the three black sisters who are August, May, and June. This novel took place in Sylvan and Tiburon, South Carolina, where Lily grew up and where she found the answer to her questions.
The secret life of bees is about a girl named Lily who shot and killed her mom when she was just a little girl. So for that being said she had to live with her dad T-ray whos a peach farmer in Sylvan, South Carolina, he isn't a kind person he abuses her, hits her, and punishes her for the things she does. There are many conflicts in this book, one is Rosaleen, lily and T-Ray’s maid she pours snuff on three white men's shoes while they were on their way to vote. And they attack her and beat her, and since there was segregation at this time, she gets sent to jail, but she had to go to the hospital to get treated before she went to jail, but Lily illegally bailed her out and ran to Tiburon. Rosaleen refused to apologize to her because the three
The Secret Life of Bees is a novel about a girl, named Lily, who escapes from her home to end up in a house filled with black people. During her stay there you read the challenges Lily faces and how she comes to understand colored people. This book is a great description of the discrimination that colored people endured, for the novel took period during the passing of the Civil War Act, includes samples of Jim Crow, explains a young girl's perspective on colored people, and shows how far colored people have gotten to gaining more freedom. To begin, the Secret Life of Bees took place in 1964, right when the Civil Rights Act was passed. This act abolished discrimination founded on race, religion, sex, etc.
The other bees, namely some of the worker bees, build the hive and get the honey storage ready. They need to continue to build the hive to make room for the new eggs the queen will lay and make room for the pollen and honey the other worker bees collect to make the hive and food ("The Colony and Its Organization"). However, when the queen bee leaves due to death or sickness, the worker bees have to do her job along with theirs. With the absence of a queen bee, some of the workers gain the ability to reproduce ("The Colony and Its Organization"). They, in turn, produce the new queen bee so they can have the normally functioning colony that runs efficiently.
Death can never be escaped no matter what. In “The Masque of the Red Death” Edgar Allan Poe shows the theme of death, a suspenseful mood, and an ominous tone. Through Poe’s use of literary devices, the reader can discover tone, theme, and mood. Throughout Poe’s life he experienced death with two of his mother’s and his young wife. Death is shown how inevitable it is with Poe’s writing and experiences combined together.
I also agree with the opinion that suffering might never end, like the novel indicates through imagery at the very end. The author manages to combine happy moments with sad ones even though the sad ones takes the larger share. In addition, he accomplished his aim of having an audience that is glued to the book all along sine it is both engaging and informative. The author has a perception that the world is composed of more bad things than the good ones. This novel will be important to me as I explore the themes of post-apocalyptic fears and human struggles.
Bees Bees are an essential part of almost all habitats and are the biggest pollinators of flowering plants throughout the world. Bees are found on every continent except for Antarctica. Some bees are native to an area, while humans have brought others to new areas. Every bee plays an important role in the ecosystem of the hive. Bees are vital to ecosystem function as the dominant pollinators of flowering plants in both natural and agricultural ecosystems.
There are very few people who like bees, and many people around the world have a negative opinion of the honey bee. There are many factors that contribute to this popular opinion. Some of the reasons that people have a poor opinion of bees are due to the fact that they are allergic to them, are afraid of them, or simply find their presence annoying or irritating. However, while most people have negative feelings towards honey bees, there are many characteristics of them that make their existence essential to our way of life.
