To be completely honest, I was hesitant to start this book due to its theme of racism and how as a black woman, it made me slightly uncomfortable to think of this topic by free will. Incidentally, I’m more than glad to have seen past that aspect because, in the end, I was able to read a timeless classic. The Secret Life of Bees brings delightful characters to life, by giving each their own memorable and lovable personality to bring to the table. My favourite character by far was August, the eldest of the trio of sisters. Her calm and gentle demeanor allows the people around her to open up, like how sunflowers bloom as soon as sunlight is in sight. Tree frogs alone make you wish for earplugs.” (Kidd, p.173.) Lily’s tone in this passage screams teenage sarcasm. It displays that she is young and playful, which most kids are at fourteen. Lily’s narration brings heart to the story and demonstrates the author’s strong ability to write for different age groups, and realistically depicting them. Plotwise, this tale is a captivating mystery that I found incredibly hard to put down. Continuously, I found myself at the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I was invested to the point of crying throughout an entire chapter, due to a character’s death being so beautifully written. The language that the author uses is so mesmerizing, that I have saved a couple of her quotes to remember. “Someone who thinks death is the scariest thing doesn't know a thing about life.”(Kidd, p.2.) This quote reveals just how hard Lily’s life has been so far. Children her age don’t usually think of life like this.
