INTRODUCTION
Fresh water pollution in South Africa
Freshwater pollution is the contamination of inland water with substances that make it unfit for its natural or intended use. Pollution may be caused by faecal waste, chemicals, pesticides, pesticides, petroleum, sediment, or even heated discharges. Plants and animals can’t live without freshwater, because all organism are made up mostly by water. A tree for example is about 60% water and most animals are about 50-65% water. Also each of us needs huge amounts of water.
Freshwater ecosystems and pollution, the concentration of dissolved oxygen highly depends also on the amount of pollutants, because most water pollutants cause low oxygen levels in freshwater. These pollutants make it difficult

Some of the industries are paper industries, textiles and sugar mills, distilleries and thermal and power plants among others. The kinds of effluents generated by industries are also numerous. The paint and varnish industries produce aromatic long-chained hydrocarbons, textile industries put out various dyestuffs and metal salts which are used as mordents. The other industrial effluents contain a host of pollutants such as oils, greases, plastics, cadmium, lead, mercury, acids, and alkalis. Cyanides and chlorides, produced by various …show more content…
Swimming and drinking in contaminated water can cause skin diseases and also can lead to cancer, reproductive problems, and typhoid fever and stomach ailments in humans? Highly polluted water can harm internal organs like heart and kidneys. Synthetic organs cause serious damage to human health.

Chemicals like fluoride, arsenic, lead chlorine and petrochemicals in water can cause adverse effect on human health. Nitrate contamination can prove fatal for infants as it can restrict the oxygen to the reach the brain causing the blue- baby syndrome.
Effects on animal health
Water pollution kills life that depends on these water bodies. Fishes and the aquatic organism are poisoned due to industrial chemicals and agriculture pesticides. Human litter let into water system gets the aquatic animals caught and get killed due to suffocation. Oils spills in water causes animals to die as they ingest it or come across it. Oil cannot be dissolved in water so it causes suffocation in fish and birds.

What are the large Factories doing to our environment? In the novel Big Burn written by Lesley Choyce Chris and Marina attempt to get the incinerator shut down for polluting the surrounding environment. Chris and Marina decided it would be best after they came across 4 dead merganser ducks on the outer area of the incinerator. After confronting Mr. Gibson (Incinerator Boss) about the pending issue Chris and Marina are kicked out of the building and escorted home by cops. However Chris and Marina’s intentions are only fueled more when Dial Chemical Company attempts to build a second incinerator at Rocky Harbour.
All organisms need oxygen to survive and when their is not enough oxygen, it leaves plants and animals to die. The area of water where there is a low count of oxygen are often called a dead zones. Also, an increase of the pH level in the water can be created because of algae blooms. The toxic killing algae can make humans sick. For the aquatic animals, these toxins attack mainly the organisms liver and nervous system (Nitrogen and
My 8th grade class went to the Conodoguinet creek to test if there was any pollution in the creek water. Before we went my hypothesis was, “If we go to the Conodoguinet creek and test the water, then the creek will have little to any pollution in it because we haven’t had a monstrous storm in the past few months so there wouldn’t be an excessive amount of acid rainfall or runoff” There are three types of macroinvertebrates ( an invertebrate fauna - animal of a particular region - that can be captured by a soo - which is a certain net or sieve - ) that we were looking for, Group 1 ( which is pollution sensitive - they cannot have any pollution- ), Group 2 ( which is somewhat pollution tolerant - they can live with some pollution-) and Group
A subtropical wilderness with grass marshes, forests thick with trees hundreds of years old and hardwood hammocks (trees that only grow a few inches tall but packed very close together but can take up acres). Seems like a place to protect. Ever since the 1900 draining of the everglades, the ecosystem has shrunk by 50%. People did not see how important the Florida everglades where. The effect of the polluted water in the everglades is causing problems for both people and the inhabitants of the everglades.
For example, algal blooms can lead to a reduction in the amount of light that can make it through the water (Rice University, 2013). This causes plants to die off, which then results in oxygen depletion. Oxygen depletion means that there is little to no oxygen in the water. An environment becomes anoxic when it has zero amounts of oxygen (Darley et al., 2013). This results
During the Industrialization, factories began to appear near rivers in the middle of villages. Despite all of the output of goods, it created many problems in the villages. “…Industrial growth brought with it a host of environmental pollution problems” (Document 3). This occurred because the towers released smoke and chemicals into the air, this impacted the farming in the villages by contaminating the crops. It also caused respiratory problems to many people that lived around the factory.
Our beautiful state of Florida is one the richest states when it comes to the diversity of ecosystems. Especially when it comes to our aquatic life such as freshwater and saltwater ecosystems. The state of Florida is one of the states that its water supply is gathered from many different rivers, streams, and springs throughout the whole entire state. All of the aquatic ecosystems are connected in some sort of way. No matter the running water below the surface, the ground water, and or the water on the surface all help our drinkable water supplies, every single industry present in our state, help keep wildlife habitats thriving, improve our agricultural success within our communities.
People complain about pollution from factories, cars, global warming, and the melting of polar ice caps, yet many people disregard the dangerous that come with fracking. Fracking is the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks, and/or boreholes to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas. Fracking is causing an epidemic economically and environmentally. Fracking is continuously destroying the earth day by day. From the endless fracking today’s economy is depleting.
Manufacturing factories created smoke, fumes and toxins as seen in source 1(a). Many workers would have to endure these conditions. The demand of natural resources increased as many machines ran on wood and coal. Deforestation began and carbon emissions rose; pollution (water and air) was the result. London was only able to see one-sixth of sunshine in a few country towns.
Lake Erie Hurry, Lake Erie needs your help! In 1960 there was severe pollution in Lake Erie and now, 3 years later, the pollution is back and has created an extensive amount of algae. In the 1960s Lake Erie was extremely polluted. “As a result of these pollutants, Lake Erie contained increased levels of phosphorus and nitrogen, which contributed to eutrophication - a process that encourages the development of algal blooms.” (Michael Rotman).
Water Pollution is a huge environmental problem that has serious effects on marine habitats, animals, and water quality. BP1: The world's marine habitat has been getting worse because of how bad the pollution has gotten. “ Over 80% of marine pollution comes from land based activities “ (source 5 ). This quote explains how most of the water pollution is caused by human activity. “ Plastic litter does not degrade, can be expected to last in the oceans for hundreds of years “ ( source 6 ).
Pollution is the introduction or release of substances or energy that decrease the quality of the marine environment. Many pollutants are toxic of harmful to marine life (Castro and Huber, 2010). South Africa is known around the world for being one of the most diverse marine environment in the world, with 83% of the known fish families residing in South Africa (Van der Elst, 2007). There are also many marine species that are endemic to South Africa, which means they are only found in South Africa. Almost 30% of the South African population lives on the coastline (Taljaard et al. 2006), which has led to the urbanization of the coastlines and which then led to the industrialization of these areas.
Marine pollution such as presence of organic matter in the ocean can result in the condition known as hypoxia or oxygen depletion and this can have adverse effect on the marine life including plant and animals and fish. Death of these fish can result in loss of millions of US dollars that are generate from the fishing industry. Marine pollution can also result in presence of foul smell resulting from the decomposing sewage being directed to the ocean and this has the effects to hinder recreational activities taking place in the sea as well as cause discomfort and breathing problem to the surrounding population (Laura, 11).marine pollution can also result in danger to human health. The human swimmers and water sport lovers can become endangered by swimming in the polluted marine waters (Laura,
LITERATURE REVIEW What is water pollution? As the country is becoming more and more populated, the demands for social services have increased significantly. This has led to an increase of the pollution in many developing towns such as Ga-kgapane. The most disturbing and problematic forms of pollution in Ga-kgapane is the pollution of the natural streams. Water pollution is when there is a build of one or more substances in water to such an extent that it causes problems for animals or plants.
Water is the most important component found on the surface of the earth because it is source of life for living creatures. However, water pollution has become a global concern. Water pollution can have several forms from diverse sources. It is expected that there will be a lack of clean water in next few decades due to pollution. Nile river water in Egypt is the focus of attention of many studies due to many reasons.
