Washington was born Virginia, Washington on a farm on April 5, 1856, to Jane and Washington Ferguson. Booker T. Washington was an American educator, author, orator, advisor to two presidents of the United States and Civil Right Activist. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the prevailing leader in the African-American community and maybe one the most well-known African-Americans in the nineteenth century. As a young kid growing up on a Virginia farm, Washington had to attend school in the morning followed by an afternoon of hard work in a salt or coal mines in Malden when he was ten years old. Washington would first learn the virtues of frugality, cleanliness, and personal morality while serving as a houseboy for a white family. After finishing school Washington left his home to attend Hampton Institute, one of the original freedmen’s schools dedicated to industrial education. Washington would graduate with honors and become a teacher in his hometown of Malden. In 1881 Washington would return to the Hampton Institute and become a teacher but would leave the job at age 25 to open the Tuskegee Institute in an old church. Fannie Norton Smith, Washington’s home-town sweetheart and Washington married in 1882 and had the first of their three kids in 1883. Rex David Thomas most likely known as Dave Thomas, was born July 12, 1932 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was born to adoption and never knew his birth mother. At 6 months old Thomas was adopted by a couple from Kalamazoo, Michigan, but his adoptive mother passed away when he was only 5 years old. And by age 10 he had lost 2 stepmothers. While he was in Maine he spent his summers with his adoptive grandmother, one of his closest relatives, as well as one of his biggest influences. As he was still a teen his dad took him to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he worked as a paperboy, golf caddy, and soda fountain counter in a drugstore. He is famously known for being a Union leader during the Civil War, but he has had several other accomplishments while serving in the United States Armed Forces. He graduated the Military Academy (West Point) in 1846, and shortly after that, he fought in the Mexican War. Following his service in that war, he began teaching military engineering at West Point. Although he has served in many wars and helped the Armed Forces in many ways, his most well known accomplishment was serving as leader for the Union army in the first year of the Civil War. Throughout his childhood, although his father did not live far away, he did not pay attention to him. He essentially was fatherless until his mother remarired and he decided to take his stepfather’s last name and assume a new identity. At age 16, Washington enrolled in The Hampton Institute for Blacks where he was introduced to the idea of learning a trade. At this school, he not only learned how to become a janitor, but he learned the importance of hard work. It was during this time that Washington gained the belief that in order to earn the respect of white people, black people needed to work hard to prove their worth. Washington eventually worked hard enough so that he was eventually in charge of the Tuskegee Institute. He eventually purchased a plantation to serve as a permanent residence for the school. In contrast, W.E.B. Dubois grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Although he was proud of his black culture, he identified as mulatto. He spent his childhood attending white schools, socializing with white friends and totally integrated. His education was also supported and looked highly upon by whites. Walker was an amazing composer and very good at what he did. Walker was the first black American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1996. Walker was an amazing composer, a great and loving family man, a successful writer, and an inspiration to all who compose music or have composed any piece of music in the past with Walker.
