Gilgamesh’s dictatorial and authoritarian styles tie into how Thucydides viewed innate dictatorship. Thucydides saw how corrupt human nature was and commented on how people during the Peloponnesian war reacted by saying, “Indeed…men take it upon themselves to begin the process of repealing those general laws which are there to give a hope of salvation to all who are in distress, instead of leaving those laws in existence, remembering that there may come a time where they, too, will be in danger and will need their protection” (Thucydides, 245). The manner in which Gilgamesh abused his power might be one of the few things Thucydides agreed with. Thucydides believed human beings were innately sinful and their only good intentions came from being influenced under laws and communal constrictions. Gilgamesh, being one-third God, has no restrictions; therefore, in Thucydides eyes is bound to allow his viler desires to control his actions.
Gilgamesh was born a king, but Joseph had dreams of someday being a leader and having people bow at his feet. When Joseph told these dreams to his father and brothers this made them hate him all the more. After Joseph was sold his master saw the he was loyal and trust worthy so Joseph was put in charge of the house. The master’s wife tried to seduce Joseph, and when he did not sleep with her she lied and said that he seduced her. He was locked up or knocked down from his high status just as Enkidu was bought in to bring Gilgamesh down from his high cocky status.
He is a poor leader of his city-state. He is described as “arrogant, and he continually oversteps his bounds as a ruler” (“From the Epic of Gilgamesh” 139).
‘Ozymandias’ and ‘My Last Duchess’ are both poems about the pride of men and how it always leads to ruin. ‘Ozymandias’ looks at the pride of men as opposed to Nature, and declares it a foolish notion, mocking humanity as whole. ‘My Last Duchess’ looks at the pride of men in contrast to emotions and portrays it as a dangerous force, describing pride as an insinuating sickness of the mind. The initial imagery in ‘Ozymandias’ emphasizes the broken remnants of the monument as the aftereffects of pride.
Civilization means to develop in society, to grow towards a higher advancement. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, N.K. Sanders, the main character Gilgamesh goes on many journeys with his friend or brother Enkidu. Throughout the book Gilgamesh and Enkidu go through stages, or transitions that change who they are mentally and physically. They both change in the end, but Gilgamesh change is more mentally than physically. Gilgamesh’s transition from the way he acted before Enkidu and after Enkidu, Enkidu’s transition from having more of an animalistic nature to becoming a more civilized being, and Before Enkidu, Gilgamesh was seen has only a king, he was seen as the man who knew everything.
Always encountering success, Gilgamesh was once a tyrant to his people. Reflecting on his rule, he recalls that, “He demanded from an old birthright/the privilege of sleeping with their brides” (15). His triumphs fostered arrogance. To him, everyone else paled in comparison. When he experiences defeat, however, Gilgamesh grows as a leader, seeing the similarities between him and his subjects, their common humanity.
He had many extraordinary qualities, and heroic characteristics. The most obvious being that he is a king, a man of highest level in society. He was also known and appreciated for building many walls and temples around his city, which no man who followed ever matched. However, after the presence of Enkidu was made, Gilgamesh started to become the more noble and favored ruler of Uruk. Since he finally knew what it was like to have a companion and someone of his level of greatness, he no longer terrorized his city as he did before, and is still aware that death is inevitable.
In comparison, it’s always observed on how different scholars find the similarity of especially marital settings, characters, and as well as the wanderings of the mythological world. Instead of feeling safe under a divine ruler, people feel threatened and pray to gods to protect them. Gilgamesh oversteps the family boundaries, and this constant violation causes Gilgamesh to lose favor and love from his own subjects. A good king can lose the favor of his people because without them, the glory of being a monarch diminishes, losing the respect and loyalty from his subjects. Gilgamesh is a selfish king who is stronger than any man because he is two parts God and one part human. With his strength, Gilgamesh abuses his power causing the people of Uruk to lament. Hearing these laments, the Gods created Enkidu for Gilgamesh, to be his equal in all aspects.
The Epic of Gilgamesh gives a lot of insight to what was happening and what was expected in ancient Mesopotamia. The epic poem which revolves around a king, includes many details in to the civilization, beliefs, and values of the Mesopotamians. The king thrives to be remembered and many of his actions reflect that. The Epic of Gilgamesh show how an ideal heroic king should be in ancient Mesopotamia. The first thing it shows us is that hero kings should be strong.

In the Middle Kingdom, gods were believed to care for all of its people and not just the Divine Monarch (Wallech, 2013, p. 60). The rulers cared for the kingdom 's people which showed a sharp change in attitudes toward people. No longer was the ruler placed on a pedestal and treated like untouchable royalty. Treating citizens as a part of society assisted Egypt in growing and becoming successful in trade, writing and protecting itself. In Babylonia, the people were treated as sacred to the kingdom while outsiders were viewed as alien (Wallech, 2013, p.43).
Everybody likes rooting for a hero. And throughout the evolution of storytelling, from stories written in stone to those in tablets, heroes have always played a huge role in the stories we tell. As literature evolved, and more legends and tales began to appear in different cultures, the idea of a traditional epic hero was established. Stories like "The Epic of Gilgamesh," and "The Odyssey," set the mold for this type of heroes, an influence that can clearly be seen when analyzing literature. In fact, most of these characters, regardless of the time and place they were created in, shared similar characteristics to the two kings.
