In the novel, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, rhetorical devices are used to illustrate the characters throughout the book to be either be good or evil by the usage of diction, connotation and denotation as well as other rhetorical devices. By using rhetorical devices it allows the audience to gain a better deeper comprehension of the book. The rhetorical devices allow Steinbeck to describe the characteristics of each character to define them as either good or evil which allows the reader to analyze the parallels between one another. In addition, rhetorical devices for example metaphor, tone, diction, simile, imagery, analogy, allegory, and paradox contribute to the author’s style which creates an image for readers to comprehend. Steinbeck uses word choice, tone, anaphora to highlight the juxtaposition between Cathy Ames and Abra Bacon to illustrate how evil and goodness change the perspective about their inherent point.
Gatsby Extended Response, Logan Veley, Period 1 Throughout the novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses a unique system of color descriptions to mold his story. His use of these colors had an astounding impact throughout his writing. Fitzgerald transformed something as simple as colors into a crucial element to his story. With these descriptive colors, Fitzgerald created a portal through which the reader is able to have insight to the characters’ development. The colors create a situation that allows the reader to interpret the true meaning of the scene.
Secondary Characters (Character Development #3) Truman Capote depicts the extraordinary personalities of secondary characters in his novel In Cold Blood. I believe that he does this in order to give readers a more accurate and detailed understanding of the story. Personalities of all characters are very important because they give us a clear look into what that particular character is feeling and thinking. Main characters typically get the spotlight, but Capote makes sure to share the light with all of the characters. Not only do the personalities of the characters give us a look into their head, but we can also connect with those characters on a more personal level by getting a better feel for them.
In the works of Literature an epiphany is “a moment of profound insight or revelation by which a character’s life is greatly altered” (24). In the short story “Cathedral” Raymond Carver uses epiphany to draw on the theme, blinded views can alter someone’s behavior. On the realistic level, epiphany advances the plot and character development because they are the basis for the story’s central action. They also help define the narrator and play a vital part in revealing the story’s theme. The following changes in the character’s views have shown an evident development.
Within the novel “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” it’s shown that the author uses symbolism through the setting of the book to make the novel more interesting and have a more significant or deeper meaning behind it. The author uses key symbols to let us readers know more than just what is on the lines in front of us. By using character’s names the author shows us the difference between how the character is personed versus how they actually act. The author also uses symbols through the setting like the weather or nature, like rivers, birds, and flowers to represent and sometimes even foreshadow
And so, within a couple years, was he-from cancer” (273). This message is short and concise, but it delivers a lot of information about the character. The father-in-law, once again, lost his hope and love. He kills his kitten like he saw his friend killed while in the infantry or the way he killed the enemy. He may say to himself, “no more killing, no more life should be taken away, at least from me,” but it is unavoidable.
Gatsby’s dreams and aspirations in life are rather interesting and amazing as he goes about his life in the book. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald helps highlight the social, moral, and political issue that were very present during the 1920’s and today. Gatsby is the focus of the book as before the book began, he was an ex-soldier who came to wealth by some rather illegal ways. Daisy a married woman is his person of interest, who was his ex-lover 5 years before the book started. Gatsby’s actions, and words demonstrate a clear obsession with Daisy that seems to have no end.
At the end of “Eleonora”, Eleonora’s dead spirit manifests itself to speak to the narrator and forgives him for marrying again. Poe makes both men insane to emphasize that loss doesn 't just take an emotional toll, it also takes a mental one. Death is very important to these two stories because it is the main conflict with the two protagonists. Poe is emphasizing that death is random and it is incredibly powerful. He shows what happens to someone when they lose someone that meant a lot to them.
Her golden arm represents her social class, which was old money (Schneider). Another example of the color gold used as symbol for something else is at Gatsby’s Party that nick is describing when he says, “Turkeys bewitched to a dark gold”
Thus, he was not the perpetrator of the incident and accepting the fault is to further his hope that he will achieve capturing Daisy. In the end, Gatsby is left with nothing because he destroyed all of it. After Myrtle’s murder, Gatsby watches the trust that he specifically built break down in front of his eyes.
