Gatsby relies on many people or objects that for him are symbols. People give Gatsby motivation to do things for love, work, and friendships.
Within the book The Great Gatsby, there are many themes and symbols that are prevalent throughout the book. But to me, the most important symbol is the green light, which is located at the end of Daisy and Tom’s dock. Even though you could say the green light might represent money due to its green color, I believe that it represents the American dream. Since Gatsby was reaching for the light and once he realizes that he can’t have Daisy, the light burns out showing that the light symbolizes Gatsby 's American dream.
Fitzgerald conveys the theme of the book with symbols such as the green light, the Valley of ashes, and the colors yellow and gold. The green light represents the hopes and dreams of Gatsby and how it is his destination to reach it, but he never reaches it because of how corrupted the American Dream is and in which makes the dream unattainable. The novel follows Nick Carraway as he moves from the Midwest to a place a little out of New York called West Egg in the spring of 1922; an era of economic boom, prohibition and bootlegging. Chasing the American Dream, Nick lands next door to the mysterious Gatsby, who is chasing his American dream: Daisy Buchanan. What is the American Dream? The term was first used by the American historian James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of America, which was written in 1931, here he stated that the American Dream is that dream of a land that in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.
The green light is used to represent multiple things. The first thing it represents is Gatsby’s desire, his dream which is Daisy. To win Daisy would help Gatsby accomplish his American dream. The first time the green light is seen in the novel is when Nick sees Gatsby for the first time, Fitzgerald describes it as, "he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling.
Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald continuously references a green light that Gatsby keeps on reaching for. The green light was significant by representing the theme of greed, being a symbol of Gatsby’s desire for Daisy, and serves as a motif for the American Dream. The color green in itself already illustrates the idea of greed and money. Gatsby already has everything anyone could dream for counting a house in West Egg, fame, and fortune, but still he is chasing after this light or in other words, chasing after the love of his life, Daisy. The light is a literary metaphor for Daisy since during the novel, once Gatsby reunites with Daisy the light begins to fade and reframes from reaching out for it.
The color green is often seen in the spring, when the trees and the flowers have their lives breathed back into them by the new warm air. The majority of what one sees is green at this time, when the grass, leaves, and buds are fresh. The sun becomes hotter and brighter, for it is the one responsible for this recent life and powerful light. The color green is easily associated with life, as light is connected to a source of power or a want or a need. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the significant green light at the end of the dock symbolizes the value of life to Jay Gatsby, contributing to the overall theme of the novel.
In chapter nine, Nick said, “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter - tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . and one fine morning - so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” (Fitzgerald 189). This supports Fitzgerald’s message to the reader about the American Dream because the green light stands for everyone’s hopes and dreams and desires, however, it is unattainable.

During the 1920’s, the American Dream wasn't all about peace, hope, and the pursuit of happiness. Around this time, it transitioned to being an all about money and seeing how far up in social class you could rise. Money was top priority around this time, and if you didn't have it, you hadn't completed the American Dream. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses the green light, Daisy, and Gatsby himself as symbols to convey his theme of the American Dream. The reader first hear about the green light is when the character name Nick (Gatsby neighbor) comes hom from having dinner at Daisy house And sees Gatsby on his balcony just staring across the bay at this green light. At first Nick think he just looking at the stars, but then Gatsby starts to reach his hand out towards the green light. I chose to do the ¨Green Light” as my book cover because it was it represented gatsby love and success. He lived a wonderful life; however, it wasn't complete without his true love, Daisy. For year he kept up with everything she did in life, all the way down to reading the chicago newspaper and seeing if he saw her name. His whole life was almost dedicated to meeting her again. He moved across the bay and threw open extravagant parties hoping she would waltz in somehow.
