A mass body of people pointed out what they liked and disliked. Throughout history, one can clearly see change is made through citizen’s inputs that eventually makes an impact on the quality of life. During the Progressive Era, America was portrayed as the “best country” in the world. However, no one bothered to bring up the fact that one out of three people were starving to death or only six out of ten children were attending school due to financial instability in American households. The government was well aware of the poverty issues but they did not make an effort to help the people.

According to Emmanuel Kant, enlightenment refers to being free to use an individual’s intelligence (Kristic, 312). The Enlightenment broke through an existing sacred circle that had influenced the thinking of people. The sacred circle, in this case, refers to the existing independent relationship between church leaders and texts found in the Bible. The enlightenment is also a source of important ideas like the centrality of freedom, reasons for main values of the society and democracy as opposed to the rights held by traditions and kings as the authority that rules. According to these views, establishing the contractual basis of rights would result in capitalism and market mechanism, religious tolerance, scientific methods and the organization of different states into their self-governing republics by democratic means.
However, this was not in the interest of society converting everyone to their own beliefs, but a statement in good faith to maintain peace among the people. Religious freedom, when exercised, goes way beyond that of a political nature. Society is more inclined to do the right thing and further the mission of the church when they truly believe it in

Unfortunately, indigenous people and poor people experienced the most harm from the modernising that Porfirio tried to incorporate into Mexican society. Towards the end of his reign, Porfirio began to experience civil unrest and revolts of the workers in the new modern industries he had brought into the country.

King Cotton continued to thrive throughout the fields of the South, but it simultaneously held them back from creating the technological wonders that were found in Northern factories. After the Great Famine, Irish immigrants flooded the U.S., looking for new opportunities, a chance to start a new life in America after leaving the chaos in Europe. The South offered no jobs to the desperate Irish, plantation owners had no logical reason to hire people
