The Enlightenment, also known as the Age of Reason, was a time period in the 17th and 18th century of a philosophical movement, that changed the way people thought and reasoned, enforced liberty, along with many other influential topics. The concepts that were to arise in the Enlightenment time were to further influence the American Revolution, along with many other revolutions and constitutions. The American Revolution was a political battle that took place between 1765 and 1783 where the colonists in the thirteen American colonies overthrew the power of
America’s founding fathers used enlightenment to justify their freedom from British rule. American ideals clearly reflect themes from the enlightenment movement such as toleration, natural rights of men, and enlightened leadership. “Enlightenment encouraged thinkers and activists to question the social, political, and economic order around them, and offered concrete ideas about how societies could be reordered more effectively.” (Bentley 471) Ideas from the enlightenment era laid the foundation for the justification of the revolutions that took place in the Americas during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
In 1765 the American Revolution begin. How did we get here? The enlightenment, so what is the enlightenment. The enlightenment was a philosophical movement, where great ideas came that influenced many revolutions later on. The important major philosophers were Thomas Hobbes, he believed people were selfish and needed a strong government was needed for example a monarchy.
The Enlightenment made American society more egalitarian, allowing people to relate to and believe that all people are equal and deserve equal opportunities and rights. The Great Awakening emphasized emotional religiosity or a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The colonists' perceptions of government and society as a whole changed as a result, and as a result, they rebelled against England. The Enlightenment emphasized logic, reason, progress, and science in its arguments. The Great Awakening argued for Christianity across social, economic, and educational divides.
At the time only the upper classes had a say in governments, the upper class treated the lower class very harsh and unfair. The majority of the enlightenment thinkers belonged to the lower class. With the majority of the population being lower class this system made no sense. Once people began to realize that the majority should have rule over the government they began to rebel and led to wars like the American Revolution and French Revolution. New governments evolved with time from these revolutions.

These ideas were revolutionary because leaders were influenced by the philosophers ideas such as, freedom of speech, equality, freedom of press, and religion tolerance. In the Second Treatise on government Locke said men possess the right of their lives, liberties, and possessions. The enlightenment was the central idea of many ideas from the revolution.

They were affected by gaining liberty, equality, fraternity and many more ideas. All of these ideas are very important and truly affected them. How it totally affected society, especially French society is a subject of debate, from the beginning of the Revolution to today. In fact, two schools of interpretation are involved. The first school is the conservative school, Edmund Burke is the best example.

Many philosophers published works criticizing a country’s monarch or divulging the flaws they saw in a system within the government, such as the justice system. The Enlightenment also stressed the importance of education, and as a result of this, literacy rates experienced a major upward trend. Now able to read the philosopher’s works, a larger sum of people now were educated on the corruptions within their government. This caused a questioning of traditional practices, and people began to believe they could revise their government.
The Enlightenment was a period in which scientist, philosopher, and politics argued and questioned the authority and how people could improve throughout logical changes. The enlightenment influenced to the American revolution in differents ways.there are three events in which did more impact. I would say that one of them was the publication of the book common sense by Thomas Paine. Also the first continental congress had big effect on it. And lastly it would be the changes in the government.
During the 18th Century, the Enlightenment was introduced in Europe. This new movement brought about modernization of thinking about government and individualism, and reevaluated previous beliefs. The Enlightenment had many new Philosophers who helped spread their views on government. Philosophers were similar in ideas about the rights of citizens and people’s choice of which government they want, however they differed on the reason government existed and governmental power. Overall, the ideas were a substantial departure from previous ideas about human equality, absolute rulers, and the court system.
In the time of the Enlightenment Period many changes were happening in society. In the late 17th and 18th century people called The Philosophers, met in French salons and English drawing rooms to discuss what they believed in. They made many great things happen and strived their best to make what they believed in something possible. The Enlightenment Philosophers imagined they could change the ways of society in many ways. They concluded that they could improve the laws, rights of women, religious rights, and also economic rights.
