In this extract Benvolio is presented as loyal, a peacemaker and mature. Benvolio is a foil character for Tybalt therefore he is known to be ‘benevolent’ as Shakespeare suggests in his name. Furthermore in this extract Benvolio is shown to give his recount of an earlier fight and the audience is shown his mature approach and his loyalty to his friends and family. Shakespeare shows Benvolio as loyal in this extract as only two lines Into his recount Benvolio establishes that his cousin is not to blame for the fight . He says “ Romeo that spoke him fair” highlighting to the prince and others who hadn’t witnessed the fight that Romeo too way vying for peace and hadn’t instigated the fight.

Benvolio is fully aware of how close the two families are to breaking out into a full out war with one another, and knows that this skirmish could easily be the start of it if he allowed the fight to continue. Him intervening shows how he has to act as the peacekeeper in order to keep things from escalating any further between the families. Another example is when him and Mercutio are talking in the streets at the end of Act 2. Here, Benvolio brings up that Tybalt has sent Romeo a letter challenging him to a duel. Mercutio remarks, “Alas poor Romeo!
Peer influence could be a good thing, but have you experienced the negative side of it? Well in the novel, Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare, the author describes the tragic love between a boy and a girl from the Elizabethan Era. The tragedy being that Romeo, part of the Montagues, and Juliet, part of the Capulets, is that their families were rivals. Because of this, they decide to keep their love a secret from their parents and get together. Through this journey, Many other characters come into play and are influences to Romeo and Juliet, much of who are adults.
After disputing over the fact Romeo is envious and has to quit whining Benvolio convinces Romeo to tag along. Shakespeare uses a series of hinting to the final result. For example, Romeo announces, “I fear too early, for my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars” (act 1, scene 4, lines 113-118), meaning he feels something is destined to happen. Shakespeare showing again the idea of an unchangeable fate when Romeo falls in love
”(1.1.60-61). Benvolio also shows an amount of restraint that Tybalt lacks. Tybalt’s ferocity leads to the beginning of two brawls, one of which brings about his death. Benvolio’s restraint is shown in the scene where Tybalt instigates the final brawl that leads to his death. In the resulting scene Benvolio can be seen refraining from lying about the tale of Tybalt and Mercutio’s deaths.
Romeo is very fixated on love, easily heartbroken, and depressed. These traits are more obvious as Mercutio’s humor and his ability to be reasonable lighten the rather dark shadow Romeo carries. Mercutio’s line, “If love be rough with you, be rough with love. Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down.” (I, iv, 27-28)
In William Shakespeare’s timeless play Romeo and Juliet, two star crossed lovers are faced with great adversity as they hide their romance from their feuding families. The challenge of lying to his closest companions, and going against his family’s ways to secretly marry Juliet causes Romeo to act erratically and carelessly. Throughout Act 3 Scene One, Shakespeare exposes the lovestruck Romeo’s mercurial nature and impulsivity through his thoughtless actions.

While only being “role” characters they find themselves being a huge part of the success of the story’s plot. Benvolio is a unsuccessful peace maker that relentlessly tries to inflict his moralistic diplomacy on the other characters, just to be ignored. While his counterpart, Tybalt is the complete opposite of him and tends to be the problem starter, and tries to manipulate the other character in to doing what he thinks is correct. I believe they are in this story to show the internal conflict that every man/woman is dealt with on a regular day basis. As a majority, we tend to go with our irrational side (Tybalt) then to go to our rational side (Benvolio) when put in a circumstance.
His temper and feud with the Capulets leads to a last-minute involvement with Tybalt and ends with the death of Mercutio. Romeo is furious and Benvolio describes him as “Who had but newly entertained revenge,” (III.I.167). From Romeo’s irrationality he kills Tybalt and is banished from Verona. Furthermore, the quote demonstrates Benvolio as“Wisely and slow” (II.III.94) to show how if one were to take his time and be rational, they will have a better outcome or in Shakespeare’s writing, still be alive.
Benvolio: The One That Didn’t Really Have A Life Of His Own The character that made the play better is Benvolio. He is part of the house of the Montagues. He is the nephew of Montague, and Romeo’s cousin. Benvolio is helpful, brave, non-romantic, committed, caring, and protective.
Characters are the source of messages that help to reveal the meaning in any text. There are many differences in the male characters in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. All the male characters have differences and similarities. Romeo and Paris have a different view of love for Juliet. Tybalt and Benvolio both react differently to the feud.

In this essay the following characters and features will be compared and contrasted: Mercutio and Benvolio, their differences and similarities, how they effected the play, how they participate in the feud. I choose these features because even though they are not “main characters” they still greatly influence the play. I will explain how they effected the play, how their personalities make them foils and how this in turn effects them as characters and everyone around them.
