Lastly, I would like to briefly mention how the yard sale of Bilbo’s property as he returned home slightly resembles the end of The Odyssey, where the hero Odysseus returns home after much traveling to many unkind strangers crowding his wife and home. Bilbo, too, had to metaphorically fight to reclaim what was his from the many people to whom his properties had been sold.
Bilbo finally evolves into a brave hero and fits in with the dwarf party. Chapter eight shows Bilbo freeing himself by cutting down a spider web and described feeling different about himself. He then goes on to name his sword as many legendary heros have before which shows qualities of heroism and leadership. He also expresses his bravery and intelligence in chapter nine by devising a plan to get the party out to Esgoroth. Last but certainly not least Bilbo discovers how to use the key to get to the great dragon Smaug.
A Hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, or noble qualities; i,e Brave, Adventurous, and Honest. Bilbo’s journey closely resembles the Hero’s Journey because he shows the characteristics of an ordinary hero while still being extraordinary in the same process. As Bilbo follows the Hero’s Journey he has become extraordinary. Bilbo has become extraordinary during his refusal to call because he was going to prove that he could do it even if he wasn't adventurous in the beginning. After being proposed an adventure Bilbo replies with ”Sorry!
When people go places and step out of their comfort zones, sometimes they come back a different person. In The Hobbit, Bilbo is an ordinary hobbit, but after his adventure, it is apparent that Bilbo is now a hero. Three events that occur that show this transformation are when Bilbo jumps over Gollum, when Bilbo slays a spider, and when Bilbo travels to the Elvenking and Bard in order to make peace. The moment Bilbo leaps over Gollum demonstrates to the reader how Bilbo is beginning to go from hobbit to hero.
In the story “The Hobbit” Bilbo can be seen as the hero when he sacrifices his family’s name to be a part of the quest to get Thorin's gold back Bilbo's first approach is his attempt on stealing the trolls’ treasure. He later is met by the goblins, Gollum, elves, and spiders. Each fear he faces develops Bilbo as a hero, getting him ready for his greatest quest, stealing the treasure from Smaug.. Another example of Bilbo putting others before himself is the treasure he willing to give in order to bring peace to the men, elves, and dwarves. Last, but not least, Bilbo is willing to sacrifice his life for a cause bigger than himself.
A hefty portion of us, as children, have watched films in which a brave man goes out to destroy the evil and spares his kin. We always thought of this hero to be brave, tall, strong, and fearsome. Bilbo Baggins is as much as a hero as these heroic characters, however he is only a short, weak, cowardly hobbit who is afraid to leave the Shire, yet by the end, Bilbo Baggins defeats the five armies and spares all of Smaug. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, is written by J. R. R. Tolkien. When Bilbo Baggins gets an unexpected knock on his door, he is called to reclaim the kingdom of Erebor, he refuses, unwilling to escape the comfort of his hometown: the Shire.
Bilbo’s long and perilous journey with the dwarves’ taught him that he does not have to live a life that is considered “respectable” by his neighbors. Bilbo could have adventures and make a difference while still being himself. “Bilbo was no longer quite respectable… He was held by the hobbits of the neighborhood to be ‘queer.’ I am sorry to say, he did not mind.
CHAPTER ONE Q.1 What I have discovered about Bilbo Baggins is that he is a hobbit, I also discovered he is nice, polite, and organized. Hobbits are shorter they also wear no shoes because they have big hairy callused feet. They have curly hair, deep fruity laughs, wear brighter clothing, and live in hobbit holes.
In the Hobbit, Bilbo is morphed into a hero when he finds the ring. The reader can infer that the ring was key for him to become a hero because without it he most likely would not have been a hero in the situations where he was using the ring to save the others.
The “hero’s Journey” begins with a call to an ordinary individual to leave the ordinary world. This calls prompts the individual to leave the common life to venture into the realm of the unknown. The journey continues with the individual leaving the ordinary world to descend into the special world. The decent into the special world brings the individual through different adventures and experiences that reveal weakness and allow for strength and development to conquer those weaknesses. Bilbo baggins journey represents the “hero’s Journey”as he leaves the ordinary world as an ordinary hobbit,enters the special world as a developing warrior,and returns as an unexpected hero.
Bilbo perfectly fits Joseph Campbell’s definition of a hero and his adventure parallels the journey that Campbell formulated many years ago. Bilbo’s actions and journey show that he risks his life for something bigger than himself, making himself a great
When Bilbo opened his eyes, he wondered if it was as dark as it was with his eyes shut. Bilbo couldn’t hear, see, or feel anything but the stone of the floor. Bilbo got up until he touched the wall of the tunnel. He couldn’t find anything up or down, no signs of goblins or dwarves. Bilbo was far from certain even of the direction they had been going in when he fell.
The Hobbit’s title character and most important figure is Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo’s thought, feelings, and actions are the focus of the book. Bilbo is a hobbit. A hobbit is generally a short being with very large feet so that they can be quieter because they’re natural thieves. They live in homes built in the ground, surprisingly the homes are quite clean. Bilbo had a very impressive family and background. Bilbo wasn’t much like his family, he was a quiet hobbit that cared about dishes and linens more than the adventurous world around him.
Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist of The Hobbit, is about half the size of humans, beardless and with hairy feet. Being this small he is known to be a timid and apprehensive hobbit. Throughout the story he shows many characteristics, some good and some bad. For the first half of the book, he is often hapless and rather cowardly.
