Good evening everyone. As you all know my name is Nick Carraway and I am humbled to have the opportunity to speak here at my dear friend Jay Gatsby's funeral. As we gather here today we will commemorate Jay's life by his successes and his willingness to always keep pushing forwards. It may come as a shock to most but whilst I was writing this I had trouble putting Gatsby's persona and figure on a piece of paper, But to overcome that challenge I will be telling everyone about our story. What is the definition of greatness? Some people define greatness by accomplishments and others define greatness by how they have impacted and changed the world and the people around them. Gatsby had all of these traits but what truly made him great was his willingness and determination to achieve his …show more content…
Gatsby wanted to make his dream a reality and didn’t stop until he had achieved it. Jay showed his greatness in many ways especially through his determination, grit, and willingness to put anything on the line in order to achieve his goal. Many people see Gatsby and his life and get led to the assumption that he wasn’t great due to the fact that he attained his money through illegal means. Although this is true I disagree. Money is one of the most important and crucial things in life and you should put everything on the line in order to obtain it. This is what Gatsby did: he pushed himself to get and obtain wealth by any means necessary. New York and Long Island especially is a place where cruel and despicable people reside; My experience on Long island was dreadful. “Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction —Gatsby, Who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn”. Gatsby differentiates himself from the common people. Yes, the way he obtained his wealth was unlawful but he never used his money to think that he was better than anyone else;even with all the
Jay Gatsby was a wealthy character who was determined to achieve whatever he set his mind to. His determination and motivation, whether it be influenced by himself or by others, helped him to strive for what he wanted. Gatsby’s goal was to live a life that was better than the one he had lived as a child. While Gatsby was motivated by others, he displayed several characteristics of self-motivation throughout the book as he worked towards this goal before he was distracted by an unrealistic dream. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby could have lead the same extravagant lifestyle as a self-motivated man rather than as a man motivated by the dream encompassed by the Green Light.
The Flawed Gatsby Precisely what defines greatness? This thought-provoking question has been debated throughout history as people attempt to label historical figures and athletes alike. While some measure the statistics in prolific athletes, everyday people may be judged by their achievements, benevolence, and character. In the classic novel, The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is utterly enamored with his long-lost love, Daisy Buchanon. To win over his dream girl, Gatsby amasses an enormous wealth and moves into an extravagant mansion just across the bay from Daisy and her unfaithful husband, Tom.
Gatsby dedicated his life to this platonic conception of himself and doesn’t stray away from it. Although illegally, Gatsby climbs the economic ladder by being a bootlegger. Gatsby is the rags to riches story that the American Dream has been built on “[he was raised] out of nothing, right out of the gutter”(171). Another reason Gatsby stands for America itself is his hard work. Gatsby is from West Egg he is “[the] newly rich”(107)
He had to work hard for everything that he has. It took him five years to gain his wealth. Yet, the people of the upper class disregard it because he wasn’t born wealthy. There is always something stopping him. Nick talks about how Gatsby “had come in contact with such people [before], but always with indiscernible barbed wire between” (148).
In F. Scott Fitzgeralds novel, The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is a great man who is loyal to others and will do anything to reach his goals. Claim:
He was successful very at getting money, but was never truly rich. Gatsby has always had his eyes set on making the most money he could, he never lived in the present. Since Gatsby never lived in the present he did things permanently. When Gatsby was around he never was really popular and didn’t have many friends; he decided to change that for good by making a lot of money.
All Gatsby turns out to be in the end is fallacious. He lied; he manipulated people and was naive. This is not the kind of person you would want to refer to as ‘great’. Gatsby was never one for honesty. His whole identity of ‘Jay Gatsby’ is a lie itself as Nick tells us the story
The Great Gatsby was one of the best pieces of US literature. Even though Gatsby was not the narrator the book is named after him because of how interesting he is as a character and how he had such an influence on the book as a whole. Gatsby changed from the past to what we know of him during the course of the book. It is clear however that money effected Gatsby and changed him from a normal guy that fought for the US to a rich and dark person that only cares about the one things that he was never able to achieve fully.
In a sense, the word “great” can be attributed to large and grand things such as Gatsby’s, house, his lavish parties, his wealth, and even his personality. All of these can be viewed as trophies of success or in a particular person’s eyes, greatness. Throughout the novel Nick is enamored by Gatsby's outstanding personality and ability to hold onto hope. He describes Gatsby as having, “..an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again. ”(2).
Being “The Great” is known for doing big, dramatic, and heroic accomplishments. It's believed this person should be helping the community or others, doing big things for the people. Gatsby may be seen as successful due some of his history and how much money he had said. It’s understandable how people think he is so great, he knows a lot of rich people, gets what he wants but it seems he has no actual dream or goal that has to do with anyone that doesn't do anything with himself. Jay Gatsby is not “The Great”.
Gatsby's success in fortune is great, his strong will of achieving life goal is also great. He becomes the big name of the society, and becomes the upper class's deputy. Everyone is glad to come to his party, everyone admires his property, and everyone wants to be his friend, even Daisy has taken much notice of him and falls in love with him again. Gatsby is also great when he loses his life in order to protect Daisy from the accident. He is too great to think that he could get the
First reason why I think Jay Gatsby is a phony is because he lied to everyone about the source of his money. In the story Jay Gatsby tells everyone that he inherited his wealth from his family when his parents died, but later this is proven false when it is revealed that Gastby’s money is made in an illegal way which was bootlegging alcohol. The extent of Gatsby's criminal activities is confirmed by Tom Buchanan t when he shares that Gatsby and “Wolfsheim bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores…and sold grain alcohol over the counter,” (133) an illegal venture during prohibition. Which proves that Gatsby’s money was made through illegal ways.
Gatsby’s “Greatness” Greatness is showed by the choices we make in life. From how we see the circumstances and how we react to them. Gatsby is not as great of a man as Nick claims that he is. Gatsby makes foolish, childish and delusional decisions and not at all great.
In Scott Fitzgeralds novel “The Great Gatsby” it gives many examples of how Jay is not so great. Everyone in New York (in the story) thinks that Jay Gatsby is wonderful and “great”, but as you read along you notice that Jay Gatsby is not all that great. He makes himself look so good in front of everyone but in reality he's not. He started out as nothing and became something big, but no one really knew besides Nick, he could see that there was nothing great. Why is Gatsby so great?
This Jay Gatsby is great because he is a wondrous exciting person, at least to the outside world. But behind this bold rich exterior, he’s hiding that almost all of his stories and accomplishments are lies. Gatsby is a crook who made his fortune by bootlegging and most likely illegal mob activity with Meyer Wolfsheim. Calling Gatsby great in this sense is strongly ironic. Behind closed doors, he is nothing but a sham.
