There is no such thing as the truth, people lie and others continue to believe them. Except one, John Proctor from the beginning of the play is on the side of justice, and finding the truth. From the beginning of the play he questions the idea of witchcraft, and believes that it is just another act from Abigail Williams. An example of how Proctor is always on the side of truth is when he is in court and he confesses to having an affair with Abigail Williams. "A man may think God sleeps, but God sees everything, I know it now.
By the end, he becomes disinterested by the public opinion and concerned about his personal integrity. By maintaining his individual integrity, John Proctor’s life came to an end. He quotes, “I have given you my soul, please leave me my name.” (Act 4, Page 124), at this point Proctor still wants his name unscathed for personal and religious reasons. He refuses to confess and sign his name to witchcraft in respect of fellow prisoners dying after refusal to confirm dealings with the devil. As the Puritan society of Salem is so fixated and fearful of witchcraft, most individuals were gullible to almost all testimonies made.
Since the beginning of time people have gone through trials in court to either be proven innocent or guilty. In the Crucible by Arthur Miller a massive number of people were being convicted in Salem, Massachusetts because of the witch trials. The law of the land states that everyone is above suspicion until they are demonstrated to be guilty by legitimate evidence; in the play the Crucible if a person was accused of an unlawful act they were summons for being a witch and working for the devil without proper confirmation. Citizens in Salem were imposed to establish their innocent or be put to death, which caused conflicting issues in the village. Therefore, people should not have to prove their innocence.
Abigail was trying to get John wife hung at the gallows for witchery and it was a false accusation. All John had to do was write down and sign on a document that he was rightly charged for witchery and the paper was to be hung on the church door. He would not give the document to the court after he had signed it because the court had take his life and soul, so all he wanted was to keep his name. In my opinion this was a tragedy in itself but heroic at the same time because John sacrificed himself to save his wife and his name from being branded as witchery.
This court, these accusations of witchcraft, are not fuelled by the desire for justice, but to exact revenge and acquire power. All of these denunciations of people as witches were lies. Had I opened my eyes and not foolishly believed these falsehoods, fallen victim to the wily Abigail’s web of lies, perhaps these people would have never been condemned? How could I allow God’s court to be a place of such injustice? I once prided myself on my intelligence and purity of spirit, but it is apparent that I am not a noble fighter against the devil but an ignorant mortal, not worthy of the post I hold.
Throughout the Salem Witch Trials John Proctor never accepts the lies of the people, he sees through the fear and tries to convince the people that they are making an error. Proctor maintains a rock-solid belief during the entire story, and his beliefs do not change, however his attitude toward the people in Salem does change as the trials grow in size. It’s the fact that Proctors perpendicular beliefs leading to his death that make him a tragic hero and a martyr, since his final refusal to accept the lies send him to the rope. Proctors changes throughout the story also cause the people of the village to look down on him after outbursts of rage. It is Proctor’s beliefs and qualities that stop him from going along with the trials.
Also, there was no evidence that shows the two even knew each other before the trials happened (Beatrice). Going back to the play two of the main reasons Proctor is accused or brought to attention in the court was because of the affair, and on how outspoken he was about the girls being frauds. We know already that the affair is not true, but being outspoken was nothing new for John. After John beat his servant Mary Warren and dragged her to the court, to tell the truth, she turned against him and accused him of being the man with the devil's book (Beatrice). Shortly after that, John was hanged (Beatrice).
The minister himself should be able to spot the devils work, yet he cannot, because he is too holy. However, God, the Holy of Holies, sees the devil’s path, and the minister cannot. She believes that both the Witch-Doctors and Attilas are sworn enemies of reason. She believes that the With Doctors are preaching a wrong sense of morality as morality should be defined by every person and should never be imposed on them through guilt as religions do most of the time. The Witch-Doctor also “pre-empts the field of morality” (Rand, 12). She says that “a society based on and geared to the conceptual level of man’s consciousness, a society dominated by a philosophy of reason, has no place for the rule of fear and guilt” (Rand, 20). Fear and guilt are both Attilas and the Witch-Doctors methods of asserting dominance, for Ayn Rand, rationality can’t flourish when someone is vulnerable to fear and guilt.
The groupthink article states,“ Group members rationalize any resistance to the assumptions they have made no matter how strongly the evidence may contradict their basic assumptions, members behave so as to reinforce those assumptions continually.” Telling people they deserve to die is justifiable because the bible says, “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death.” Physically harming and verbally harming other American’s is okay because of personal views. Slamming God is okay because there is no evidence he is real. Both heterosexuals and homosexuals justify horrific actions because of their believes and assumptions. Bringing down others because of a personal bubble, instead of keeping thoughts intact and considering where the other is coming from. America becomes divided, but they also
