My father always cherished and motivated me to achieve good grades that could help me in life. The shyness and held in emotions prevented me from wanting to associate with anyone else. On the bright side, this was just the beginning of the life-changing experiences that were yet to come. In the Odyssey, Odysseus had to encounter a million obstacles and hardships leading to his return home to Ithaca, but in the end he returned home. My journey started freshman year, when I went to Perrysburg High School.
Edward Gallaudet’s work into the creation of Gallaudet University has led to the education of thousands of deaf people along advancements and progress in fields related to hearing status, both scientifically and socially. Almost all of Edward Gallaudet’s family have been pioneers for deaf education in America. His father, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was the man that brought American Sign Language to America and started deaf education in America. His mother, Sophia Fowler-Gallaudet, as a deaf woman, was a key part of lobbying Congressmen in the effort to establish Gallaudet University. His brother, Thomas Gallaudet was an Episcopal priest who worked with helping the deaf.
Hilterman was raised in a family of classical musicians, which ultimately inspired him to become a musician as well (Shahidi). In the film, Hilterman describes his ability to learn to play the drums as a deaf person because it “comes from your heart” and that he loves to perform. During Hilterman’s interview in the beginning of the film, he informs the audience that he has been teaching for the past two years, but feels the desire to perform one last time before he dies (Walla). He contacts all of his former band members and they all appear to be eager to perform as well. Hilterman is able to bring the band back together after they had a two year break and begins to produce the largest show in the band’s history.
One of the first of these is the passion that I have had for the fine arts since I got my first instrument in my fifth-grade year. Instruments for me then and now were used for expression, as well an escape and an outlet, even if it was just for a few minutes. I used music as a sort of antidepressant, as I felt like I did not have very many friends and felt completely alone for a long time. I also used to sing in the school choir and performing in the theatrical productions to express my emotions and feel like an important person to myself in my life. Some of the very first influences I had growing up with music was my grandpa and my music teachers Mrs. Dayton and Mr. Howe (yes, there used to be a Mr. Howe where I used to go to school as well) My grandpa, when I was little, always used to sing around the house and to the kids to make us laugh.
Jimmy Fesmire did all he could to aid his community with a humble spirit, never wanting any recognition or praise. In fact, countless people, including our pastor, were unaware of the extent of his servitude until after his death. Never wanting his works displayed on a pedestal, he was always acting behind the scenes. Only someone who meticulously followed his life would have been aware of all that he did. He closely followed Matthew 6:3-4 as he never boasted of his works or counted the people he had helped.
As a father Atticus has done everything he can to maintain his children, Jem and Scout, informed of what really is like out there in the real world. Honesty seems to be Atticus rout when dealing with life. In times Atticus will lose trial but the courage he has won’t allow him to give up on innocent people, like Tom. Atticus is the definition of role model to follow. He’s a great father to his children showing the the truth will always push them forwards in life.
Veditz’s main Tale he usually shares is The Preservation of Sign Language. Veditz has many other tales but this one is the specific tale he usually shares and has won many awards with. His singing was very unique, he never mouthed the words but only used his hands. Veditz made this film to record sign language, at a time when nobody else had done this. Once he had recorded it, he spoke at different venues and used biblical passages to make his speech have an emotional impact for his audience.
He worked at young age to support his family and lost his hearing due to an explosion while at war. Stone was well educated and attended the University of Southern California earning a degree in international affairs. He was affiliated with both the deaf and hearing worlds and considered himself hearing for the first nineteen years of his life. Rocky understood both perspectives of the deaf and hearing worlds impacting them in positive way. He worked on many committees helping to provide deaf people with full unrestricted access to
Throughout your journey to find true love, you had many challenges along the way which made the end result even more meaningful. After many years went by and your curiosity grew you eventually talked to the selected few of which you had a crush on in your past. They gave you their reasons for not liking or dating you when you were younger, and you soon found out some of them even liked you but you never made a move. Through the first 25 years of your life you never gave up, in your search or in sports, having a prosthetic leg and all. Your motivation continues to inspire me everyday.
This past week of class has been my first exposure to American Sign Language and Deaf culture. What I have found most surprising and interesting in Deaf culture is how the community follows a more collectivist mentality. A stark contrast to the American culture I have experienced where the individual is often prioritized. Reading about Andrew Foster's commitment to expanding education for Deaf children worldwide exemplified how deeply rooted this “duty to the group” (p. viii) is within Deaf culture. The Deaf Nation video we viewed at the end of the class also solidified for me how Deaf culture isn't constrained by borders but a community which spans the entire world.
In 1953, Elvis cut his first demo at Sun Studio; he also began touring all over America. Born in rural Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis grew to become one of the most famous icons in Rock-N-Roll history. Petersen page 1-2 Presley grew up poor most of the childhood life, and the first exposure to music he had was the weekly church services. Elvis’s family was very religious, and Elvis sang gospel music in church at a very young age. Elvis was given his very first guitar by his parents, soon after he started teaching himself how to play.
After observing Huck for over forty chapters, it is safe to conclude that this twelve year old boy is molded into a more magnificent character with every step of the way. He is taught by many masters, some who do not even realize that they are the teacher. He overcomes great fears and obstacles that he never thought possible in his wildest dreams. Huck triumphs over the ideas of slavery, religious hypocrisy, and the many stereotypes of the South without ever looking back. If there is any lesson prominent in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, it is that people should never just blindly follow the crowd because it is the safest route.
