Problem: As a society, we are beginning to see that biological parents are not taking an active role in the juvenile justice system, or simply not as active as one would hope they would accept and perform, which is presenting further problems and concerns within the system (Baker, et al., 2013; Greenwood, 2008). Due to parents not being as actively involved as what certain individuals may like to see, other concerns can arise, creating this sense of criticism, along with a flawed juvenile justice system to the untrained societal eye because parents are not home with their families, they are in out of home placements (Amandoala, 2009; Farrugggia, & Sorkin, 2009; Woods, Farineau, & McWey, 2013; Younes & Harp, 2007).

If one does not have a strong bond or attachment with their parental figure or main caregiver, negative side effects are more than likely to occur (Dujardin et al., 2014; Gautheir et al., 2004; Hoeve et al., 2012; Taylor & McQuillan, 2014; Whelan, 2003). When attention and reinforcement for behaviors is suddenly discontinued, youths will seek out ways to recapture the attention, often times resorting to noticeably negative behaviors due to associating them with attention and their attachment to their parent (Bowlby, 1980; Dujardin et al., 2014). Studies have found that if an individual is constantly dislocated via removal and placement in foster care, shelter care, or a group home, in addition to lacking any sense of consistency and stability, they will have a hard time developing an attachment with their caregivers, if one is developed at all (Dujardin et al., 2014; Whelan, 2003), causing harmful behaviors to likely ensue (Amatya, & Barzman, 2012; Dujardin et al., 2014; Gautheir et al., 2004; Hoeve et al., 2012; Taylor & McQuillan, 2014; Whelan,
Essentially, it is obvious St. Louis City juvenile justice has taken great strides in ensuring their clients partake in juvenile justice reform. Certainly, over the years this has been the center piece of the institution in providing a plethora of services, which compassionately meets many of the needs of its youth. However, despite the history and longevity associated with the St. Louis City’s juvenile system, including the uniqueness of the services they provide within the institution today. The need to further develop facility resources, which provides adequate programming and additional tools for its detainees and staff is continual. Everyone has heard of the juvenile justice system; however, how many people have dealt with it firsthand? Not many people actually know what goes on behind the closed doors of these “rehabilitation centers” and the injustice that occurs within. Instead of rehabilitating children, the juvenile justice system treats them as adults, leaving them helpless and on a straight path to failure. The multi genre piece (MGP) called “Juvenile Justice System,” written by Brooke Hermiller, brings to light the unfairness caused by the juvenile justice system. Hermiller’s argument regarding the corruptness of the juvenile justice system is strengthened by her use of multiple genres, including letters, narrative stories, articles, and even a recipe.
The Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention and Protection Act (JJDPA) was established in 1974 and was the first federal law that dealt comprehensively with juvenile delinquency to improve the juvenile justice system and support state and local efforts at delinquency prevention. This paper will assess the JJDPA and summarize its purpose and implementation and enforcement. Next, there will be a discussion of the historical context of the policy; followed by a focus of the latent consequences. Finally there will be a vignette as to how this Act has affected a person or family as well as personal reflection toward the policy.
They may not “have the right to claim they know what is good for them” (Young, 1990). As such, parents or legal guardians ideally help guide them in their path toward adulthood to learn to make sound life choices. However, the level of marginalization delinquent juveniles face is particularly sticking. “Being a dependent in our society implies being legitimately subject to the often arbitrary and invasive authority of social service providers and other public and private administrators, who enforce rules with which the marginal must comply, and otherwise exercise power over the conditions of their lives”( Young, 1990).
Attachment is very important in a child’s life, but if a child is not attached to anyone it can make their future very hard. “Abused and neglected children (in or out of foster care) are at great risk for not forming healthy attachments to anyone. Imagine being a child imprisoned for committing a crime for which you did not understand the consequences. Alone and afraid, with only hardened criminals and psychopaths as adult role models, you live in fear. Through a vicious combination of physical, sexual, emotional, and mental abuse, there is no option but to turn back to crime as an adult, and continue the cycle. This is a daily reality for thousands of American juveniles. Yet, we continue to call it the juvenile justice system.
The rising deaths and DCFS cases is a testament to the disservice our nation is doing to neglected and abused youths. Once kids are placed in the foster care system, they are often moved from one placement to another which may negatively impact all aspects of their lives that are critical to success in later life such as school, social relationships, and environmental/community influences. This constant separation and loss may lead youths to feel hopeless, and resent social interactions as they feel that social relationships are extremely fragile. This affects group treatment as individuals may drop-out of treatment due to a new placement, or decline to actively participate as they feel hopeless and feels distrustful of everything around them. When children and youths cannot trust their caregivers for reassurance, they have no where to turn but the public.
We have seen today in society of how crime rates have been rampant and how statistics show that most of the crimes were being made by minors. I believe that when most of them look at the bottom of these young offenders come disproportionately from impoverished single-parent homes that are located in the neighbourhoods desinvertido and have high rates of learning disabilities, mental health, and substance abuse and problems with the help of the system of juvenile justice that can make a great return on a successful transition to adulthood. Their ages ranged from 20 and under, most are under fifteen years of age. Juveniles tried as adults must assume the same consequences as any other criminal and are subject to state prisons with inmates much higher and that have probably committed crimes much more tortuous then you could ever have. These minors between the ages of nine to twenty according to the offence committed or of the number of times that are prosecuted and believe that it is immutable.
The “Primetime: New Model for Juvenile Justice” video discusses that kids in Missouri commit crimes because the families are not supportive, kids are abused by the parents and feel abandon by their parents, and the new model of the juvenile justice system in Missouri. Most importantly is the fact that the model consisting of programs such the Rosa Parks Center and Waverly Youth Center should be followed or attempted as it shows it works to rehabilitate the kids. Both programs are not a jail but a place in which kids share their problems and feelings in a small group setting. Missouri Juvenile Justice system knew that the traditional juvenile jail did not work in Missouri so the creation of these youth centers to work with kids’ behavioral problems.
Within the urban communities, negative perceptions are magnified. Adolescents are more prone to be a product of their environment, especially those whose parents are incarcerated. Because of this trend adolescents are being incarcerated at an alarming rate and sentenced to adult facilities. According to Sophie Bloom, M.S.L.Ac, by voicing their concerns and their attitudes towards things in the world, parents greatly influence their child and their child’s development. Therefore having a present and positive parental figure while growing up is extremely important for a child or a creature's development. The lack of affection and/or abandonment of a child can also cause severe consequences later in the child's life. According to Judith E. Carroll, Tara L. Gruenewald , Shelley E. Taylor, Denise Janicki-Deverts , Karen A. Matthews, and Teresa E. Seeman “The most toxic childhood stressors are those that occur in the absence of emotional support from a caregiver.” The lack of a parental figure and the absence of emotional support can greatly affect a child's life it can be considered one of the most harmful occurrences in a child's life.
Some children that have been grossly mistreated, neglected or abused fail to create secure attachments. Secure attachment is vital to the formation of the Childs sense of self and others that pave the way and sets up the course that guides the emotional and behavioral reactions that follow him through life (Hornor, 2008). It has been shown that failure to have positive experiences as well as abuse and neglect causes those memory systems to be filled with fear, mistrust and rejection (Mikic & Terradas, 2014).
