Component 1: Writing Analysis Growth Narrative Throughout the semester growth can be seen in my writing from the Into the Wild prep work that demonstrates my starting point to the final Into the Wild Essay that demonstrates my improvement. The prep work was one of the very first assignments of the year and I particularly struggled within the section “Reasoning” and more specifically, “building my language through cause and effect language.” After writing this assignment, I wanted to focus on building a more articulate analysis through my reasoning by using “if/then” statements. In Kurt Vonnegut’s novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, this technique is applied in many instances within the novel. The main character Billy Pilgrim symbolizes the common man, and everything about him, including his name, contributes to this representation. In this deftly written novel, the author deliberately chooses the minor characters as the embodiments of different archetypes. As humans there is one attribute that gives us the opportunity to be extraordinary, that one thing is competition. In Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” Vonnegut forges an atrocious society where competition is no longer an aspect of the everyday which eliminates ambition and excellence from the average citizen, and forces normalcy and equality upon them. Conformity is something that humans have been doing for a long time. Such conformity has lead to negative outcomes. This idea is explored through “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut and “The Unknown Citizen” by W.H. Auden. In these two texts conformity eliminates individuality and causes the society to be weakened.
In the stories, "The Lie," by Kurt Vonnegut and "Barn Burning," by William Faulkner, the main characters, Eli Remenzel & Colonel Sartoris (Sarty) Snopes, both mature from childhood into adulthood. This growth and maturity develops from having family support and a stable upbringing or perhaps their growth happened within their own self-consciousness. The main characters, in both these stories, use their inner maturity to be strong and courageous and make good decisions as they are growing up. In the story, "The Lie," Eli matures into adulthood.
1965, a year which started the most substantial cultural movement in United States history: The Civil Rights Movement. This movement served as a catalyst for equality between White and African Americans. After years of suppression, African Americans took a stand against white suppression, fighting for equality to be placed on the same plane of the social hierarchy. At the time, African Americans lived as socially lower beings in comparison to white people based solely on the lack of sameness. Of course, this lack of sameness is not something they could change.
For my short literary analysis essay I wanted to dive into the theme of social conformity and non-conformity and how it ties into the characters presented in Kurt Vonnegut Jr. short story Harrison Bergeson. In Harrison Bergeson society had been set up in a way that prohibited anyone from forming an opinion or having differences in appearance and ideologies. People who were better looking or slightly smarter than their counterparts were forced to wear inhibitors in order to make them equal to the rest of society. For example the character George was forced to wear a mental handicap radio that prevents him from speaking his mind because of the fear that George might use his “superior” mind to subjugate his wife Hazel.

It begins by defining "elements of style" as the unique personal qualities that you show to the reader. Vonnegut then goes on to make an argument on why we should improve our writing style. To which he says it's out of sign of respect for the reader. Basically not putting effort into your writing will make the reader will think that you care little of them.

For instance, the creation of Kilgore Trout and the different plots of his books criticize several aspects of society by the use of science fiction such as faith, economy and oil dependency. In chapter nine, Billy Pilgrim stops at a store which has several Trout books. As he reads them, the narrator introduces the resumed plot of each one.
