Pride is an amazing, horrible thing, A fork in the road that leads to two things, life and death. My parents always told me “Pride comes before a fall”. I never truly understood what that meant before I read this story it means that if you are too confident about yourself, something bad will happen to show you that you are not as good as you think you are. Pride is what the theme is in the story, “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. The story is about two brothers brothers who are very different.
Every day, individuals see symbols that represent ideas or qualities, this is called symbolism. In “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst and “The Golden Kite, the Silver Wind” by Ray Bradbury symbolism is used covey powerful messages throughout the story. In “The Scarlet Ibis” a young boy with disabilities is called an embarassment, and is told he would never be able to walk. When one day his brother builds determination to teach him, he is pushed too long and hard which leads to a fatal end. Can you ever imagine a world of unaccepting individuals, constant fight, and the loathe differences and disabilities? Could you imagine a world where no one could get along? Unfortunately, we as a clique and community are reaching nearing such a world. Adversely but sadly true, some communities and countries have already begun to discriminate against young adolescents and adults with special needs, or different views, turning into a constant fight for survival. James Hurst's short story, The Scarlet Ibis and Ray Bradbury's, A Golden Kite, The Silver Wind, Hurst and Bradbury discuss themes of allegory, rivalry, vanity and pride through characters in both stories, The narrator of The Scarlet Ibis and The Mandarin of The Golden Kite, A Silver
The Color of Pride In James Hurst's "The Scarlet Ibis" the red imagery is symbolized as pride and how it can get its way in a persons life and causes a person to make bad choices. There are many pieces of evidence to prove this and I have chosen two pieces to prove this correct. The first piece is "He had been bleeding from his mouth and his neck and the front of his shirt was a brilliant red". This shows that Doodle paid for his brothers pride and selfishness.
“The Scarlet Ibis” Paragraph Kaitlyn In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst, there are many symbols shown throughout the entirety of the story but, the most prominent one is death. This gives light to another concept of taking those we love for granted and treating them like dirt when we should be loving them because, they won't always be there. This is shown multiple times as the story progresses and you see more and more into what was supposed to be a shorter life for Doodle. “Everybody thought he was going to die-everybody except Aunt Nicey, who had delivered him... But he didn't die, and when he was three months old, Mama and Daddy decided they might as well name him.¨, This gives notice that death was supposed
Not all humans have a strong conscious, so they do whatever is best for themselves. Steven Pinker once said, “ Human nature is complex. Even if we do have inclinations toward violence, we also have inclination to empathy, to cooperation, to self-control.” In other words, this quote means human nature is more towards the empathetic side rather than the apathetic side. One could disagree with this quote because the works of literature have demonstrated that people do things out of selfishness.
