“More than half of all adults with mental health problems were diagnosed in childhood. Less than half were treated appropriately at the time” (Young). Child psychology is the branch of psychology that studies the social and mental development of children. Parents, the child, and the psychologist are all affected by the mental disorders for it affects them all. Mental disorders shouldn’t go untreated because the results could be never ending. Psychological testing should be an option to consider. Children are more than likely aware of their problems and parents should always take them into further examination. If a child shows any symptoms or signs that suggest they are suffering from any type of illness as a parent one should not use the “he’ll grow out of it” card, because most mental illnesses could never be outgrown. As stated in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, “Mental health in childhood is characterized by the achievement of development and emotional milestones, healthy social development, and effective coping skills, such that mentally healthy children have a positive quality of life and can function well at home, in school, and in their communities”(Perou). In other words, a child’s daily functioning is affected when a mental disorder is present. Not to mention that children are very difficult to listen to and understand because they have many types of behaviors, perceptions, and moods. One day they can be the sweetest and most innocent child, and the next they can be destructive and rude. Why aren’t more parents testing their children in order to see where their state of mind and mental health stands, and be capable to better comprehend them and their deeds. Parents should take action to want to help their children when they struggle with disorders because of the possibilities that the child may struggle in life during adulthood. A child who gets the treatment required to help them take control of their illness will strive and benefit from it. Society also benefits from a child who gets help because it is less likely that they developed issues that could disrupt their daily functions. The child receives help and also benefits from a better and healthier
