Winston and O’Brien’s purpose is to persuade each other to believe their own beliefs of truth and reality. They adopt an aggressive tone in order to convey their beliefs about what is real is true. In George Orwell’s 1984, Winston and O’Brien use a variety of different rhetorical strategies and appeals such as parallel structure, pathos, and logos in order to persuade each other about the validity of memories and doublethink; however, each character’s argument contains flaw in logic. Sir Ken Robinson, in his Ted Talk, discusses how systems of public education disregard the creativity as it is an important factor related with the growth of students, academically. Robinson does focus on the creativity by arguing through different examples, which does make audience, and other viewers to think on this issue and take action which is being ignored by public education system. In Florence Kelley’s 1905 speech to the convention of National American Woman Suffrage Association in Philadelphia, her main overall purpose is to fight for better child labor laws and improved conditions for working women. The two main strategies Kelley uses to convey her message about child labor to her audience is logos and pathos. In the passage, the Henry James’ diction reflects the humble and admiring tone that shows affirmation at the funeral and towards Mr. George Odger. When describing Mr. Odger, James describes him as a “humble” man who happen to “distinguished himself” by a “perverse desire to get into Parliament.” Through the use of these words James shows the overall humbleness of Mr. Odger. Mr. Odger did so much yet he never showed off, earning the respect of others. At his funeral, James describes it by showing all the people that had shown up to pay their respects.
In this passage, Charlotte Perkins Gilman highlights the theme that women must use their intellect or go mad through the use of literary qualities and writing styles. Gilman also uses the use of capital letters to portray the decline in the narrators’ sanity. This shows the decline in the sanity of a person because the words in all-caps is shown as abrupt, loud remarks. Gilman uses this method multiple times in her short story and this method was used twice in this passage. When the narrator wrote, “LOOKING AT THE PAPER!”, the major decline in her mental health was shown.
Within the speech delivered at the convocation of Douglass College at 1977 by Adrienne Rich, one is able to identify how Rich appeals to her audience emotionally through pathos, when she states, “Responsibility to yourself…means insisting that those to whom you give your friendship and love are able to respect your mind” (Rich). Here, Rich conveys how the student must demand appreciation from others in order to develop academically. George Saunders, a renowned American writer is a graduate of Syracuse University. So it is no surprise when the University asked him to give the convocation speech to the graduating class of 2013. George delivered an eye-opening and touching speech. The speech is speaking to the graduates, but also to everyone in attendance. Rowling held this speech during a graduation ceremony at Harvard University.
