A Supreme Courts nominee’s job is to be confirmed. To do so, they must navigate a Congressional hearing. These confirmation hearings are less about the nominee 's jurisprudence/case history and more about turning the candidate into a two-dimensional character that is composed of political sound bites. Then, it is the applicant’s responsibility to perform the textbook responses artfully to appease their audience. When Michael Dorf wrote, “What is Sonia Sotomayor’s Judicial Philosophy” he brought the public’s attention to the “Confirmation Ground Rules,” Here, he spoke about the choreographed hearing process.
The Toulmin Model of Argumentation is often referred to as classical argumentation because it is the basic method of effective discussion. It is simply structured and that allows for room to expand or collapse an argument. The Toulmin Model is the what is needed across the board that permits interesting and effective argumentation. This method could be applied to any type of writing because if done correctly, it would not greatly differ than any other organization method. In basic writing, you need a topic, thesis, and supporting details.
All of which helped tremendously with becoming a more precise writer and developing my identity as a writer. In the beginning of this course we worked with different readings that were intended to challenge us intellectully. Readings such as “To see your story clearly, start by pulling the wool over your own eyes” which is found the New York Times and “All Writing is Autobiography” by Donald M. Murray where readings that were meant to be challenging yet unfamiliar to us as well. This concept helped me greatly because it proved that I can be a flexible reader.
A Rhetoric Analysis of Metaphors used in the Speeches examines the emergence of morality in the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s electoral speeches. It attempts to uncover underlying discursive literal and metaphorical structures in her presidential campaign discourse. The researcher’s goal is to verify whether or not Hillary Clinton introduces herself as a progressive leader who embraces all nurturing moral values that are assumed by Lakoff (2004). The abstract nature of values such as care, fairness, health care, education and the like necessitates the use of literality and metaphors which provide an incite for their conceptualization. On the one hand, the investigation is based on a semantic point of view that relies on an application of Lakoff’s (1996)

Drafting occurs when you put your ideas into sentences and paragraphs. Here you concentrate upon explaining and supporting your ideas fully. Here you also begin to connect your ideas. Regardless of how much thinking and planning you do, the process of putting your ideas in words changes them; often the very words you select evoke additional ideas or implications. Revision is the key to effective documents.
In “Is the Stay-At-Home Dad (SAHD) a Feminist Concept? A Genealogical, Relational, and Feminist Critique,” Andrea Doucet (2016) argues that as feminist as the concept of stay-at-home fathering seems, the concept is actually informed by outmoded norms and roles. In particular, the author addresses issues of personal choice in work and family care. The author relies on an extensive body of longitudinal data to substantiate her claims. Doucet’s (2016) research parallels an extensive body of literature on the subject of stay-at-home dads, contributing tremendously to burgeoning scholarship in the intersectional areas of sociological research addressing race, class, gender, and power.
In the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, we see a distopic world which is ruled by totalitarian superstates. Our lead character Winston Smith works for a ministry in the state of Oceania. One of the key points of maintaining the control in the state is the control of language. To talk about the necessity of it, we first have to talk a little bit about the importance of the languages and learning different ones.

By doing this, Truman is appealing to people 's calls to action and implicitly reminding them that this country is theirs and they are responsible for it. This helps him strengthen his argument that the nation 's collective welfare is based on the ideals of Democracy by unifying them as a nation by his use of parallel syntax in paragraph 2. Through his repetition of the phrases "not...but," in paragraph two, he was able to make a point in a more profound and appealing way to the audience that incited the American people’s call to
The introduction of They Say, I Say by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein outlines the basic template of the authors’ approach to rhetorical writing. The central template the book focuses on is “they say, I say”, as the title suggests. This technique requires the writer to assess and evaluate the author’s argument and paraphrase it in his or her own words. Then, the writer must respond to the argument with her own stance, provide evidence, and formulate an opinion. By going through this process, the writer is forced to think critically and read closely, improving not only their own opinion, but also a better understanding of the original piece and the original author’s ideas.
I would describe “rhetoric” as the use of language in order to effectively express thought, and best convey a desired result to an audience given a specific context. I also agree with the idea that rhetoric attempts to “remedy misunderstanding” (I.A. Richards). The “rhetorical situation” is any situation where people are communicating, and is defined by a number of elements: rhetor, audience, purpose, context and strategies.
