Jane Austen introduces Emma the protagonist as “Emma woodhouse, handsome, clever, rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.” clarifying Emma's high social status, wealth and intelligence. This is conveyed in the “rich, clever” signifying the high social status of Emma.

Her employment of Emma playing a matchmaker and hurting Harriet in the process just for her benefit and entertainment affirms the idea that women don’t have boundaries and are constantly sticking their noses in other people’s business.
The two sisters make up the title of Sense and Sensibility, characterizing Elinor and Marianne respectively, and learn lessons of life together as they live through this drama. The story takes place in rural England during the early 19th Century, and the movie’s setting stayed consistent with this time period. The Dashwoods are part of the wealthy, upper class and try their best to move up the social hierarchy through marriage. We can still see their nobility by the fact that they own a piano, which Marianne plays gracefully throughout the movie.
Jane Austen wrote about two main characters that broke societal roles that should have been upheld. She put her personal beliefs of how Darcy broke out of this expectation when meeting the Bennets. Darcy was originally characterized as too prideful, based on his approachable manner at the dance, therefore giving a negative first impression to the Bennet family. Nonetheless, Elizabeth eventually chooses to let herself form her own opinion of Darcy. She also let herself open up to the idea of having a new perspective of him.
The thesis statements that appear in the narrative are: the importance of wealth and social status, the marriage of convenience, the pride – depicted by Elizabeth Bennet- and the prejudice -embodied by Mr. Darcy-. She intertwines the critic on the social values of the time with a love story, perhaps in order to make her work more attractive to the public. Another factor Austen expresses in Pride and Prejudice is the detrimental effects of superficiality. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s marriage was one set on outward appearance; they fell in love only on the basis of youth and beauty. At the present, Mr. Bennet no longer has as much affection for Mrs. Bennet as he did in his younger age, as beauty and youth are but temporary. When Elizabeth looks past Pemberley’s “lofty and handsome” rooms, she sees that the furnishings are “suitable” and have a purpose rather than being overly ornamental and “gaudy” when compared to that of Rossings, speaks to the importance the house and furnishings representation of Darcy’s characterization. Elizabeth seeing these things in Darcy’s home allows her to see into who he is, which is something she has never seen because of his rigid and guarded personality. Austen also uses satire to illustrate marriage and the fact that having social class and wealth does not necessarily guarantee taste, an opinion Austen uses throughout Pride and Prejudice as well as all of her novels. As Elizabeth sees the grounds she fantasizes being “mistress of Pemberley might be something!" and once again when she is touring the house she imagines what it would be like to be “mistress” of such a house (259, 260).
Jane Austen Marriage is a paramount concern. Marriage is not only a personal question but rather it affects the whole social group, because marriage is just not a matter of love or companionship, but much more than that. It is a political, social and economic alliance between two people, and their families. One of the chief characteristics of Sense and Sensibility is the lack of a father figure, at that time the father’s used to take decisions on the future marriage of their daughters.
The women in Sense and Sensibility were more interested in obtaining a husband due to financial difficulties than that of a good education. Gender stereotypes are seen throughout this novel, as educational success was only deemed important for the more superior men. Social orders reflect the differences in social class and gender. In Jane Austen’s novel, Sense and Sensibility she discusses feminism through the challenges women may face in marriage. Austen’s portrayal of her characters Elinor and Marianne demonstrate the struggles and pressures women face. These challenges can be seen through primogeniture, Elinor and Marianne’s approach to love and marriage, and a man’s ability to ruin or help women. The familial succession of assets typically went to the first-born son or the next male heir. In the case of John Dashwood, he inherited Norland estate after the death of his father leaving his half-sisters and stepmother “to quit the neighborhood Norland” and move to a small cottage in Devonshire.
In addition, class is complex, it is a way to label everyone. Class is portrayed in this novel by the wealth and standing one were in at this time there were the high class and the middle class standings. The difference between these social classes creates tension and prejudice. Those in the same social classes would interact and soon get married. They kept their boundarie, while families in the middle class could communicate with those in the higher class but would not be treated with the same respect as those of the higher class.
