Booker T. Washington and William Edward Burghardt DuBois were radical men for their time. Each advocated for blacks in their own ways making sure the welfare of blacks was a concern. Booker T. Washington believed that educating blacks would lead to them garnering respect. William Edward Burghardt DuBois, on the other hand, felt blacks decided their own fates. He believed that whites could not dictate how they live. Being a more conservative society at the time, Booker T. Washington’s methods were widely accepted as the correct means. Being the more radical of the two, William Edward Burghardt DuBois was often ignored and considered a dreamer by many. This lack of diversity led to a vindictive attitude towards blacks. This arrogance towards blacks troubled DuBois throughout his life. During DuBois childhood, Alfred and Mary his father and mother separated leaving William in the custody of his mother until she passed away in 1884. Despite the hardships, DuBois excelled in his schooling resulting in the New York Globe hiring him as a local correspondent before he graduated high school. Through his editorials and lectures, DuBois emphasized the need for blacks to be recognized whether it be being allowed to hold political positions or being able to hold political positions or being able to vote for their political leaders.
