Rutgers University School of Social Work is an intense and competitive program that is well-known for shaping some of the finest and highest skilled social workers today. As an aspiring social worker, I want to attend a MSW program that will challenge and prepare me for a successful career and I know that Rutgers University School of Social Work is the institution that will do just that. I chose to attend Clark while on my gap-year in Ecuador because I was drawn to the International Development and Social Change major. As a child, I would spend my weekends venturing into the art of potion-making. I would dress in an old apron and imagine myself as a scientist concocting “medicines” of lotions, soaps, and nail polishes for “pharmaceuticals.” I reflect back on this and realize that even in adolescence, I had a passion for science, but never would I have imagined that my future would hold college labs for the UCR Summer Research Program, which helped me officially decide that I wanted to enter medicine. As the Speaker of the House, you are an influential asset to the Michigan House of Representatives and a catalyst for change. I am writing you as an impassioned social work student graduating in April of 2018 who has made it her mission to advance social justice for all and advocate for human rights to be granted to all humans – born and unborn. My field placement for my final two semesters in the Bachelor of Social Work program at Grand Valley State University is at Dickinson Academy, a cultural center elementary school in southeast Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. I have been able to apply what I have learned in course materials and in the classroom to the palpable situations our students and their families are facing.
Having been a true academic, I aim to fulfil my desire to ensure my soul purpose to do good with my abilities. Marriage and bringing up children has steered me away from any progression in a career within a school which I am now seeking again. I first started working with children in a school in India with children aged 4-5 years providing tuition needs on a one-to-one basis within a classroom environment. Since working in an Indian school, I have practised childcare and enjoyed maintaining this passion as a private venture at my home and as a volunteer at my temple's Sunday school. 1. Discuss the major reasons for your interest in the profession of social work. The qualities of a social worker are innate to human nature; things like compassion, drive and resilience. The social work profession focuses on solutions for problems in an individual’s social environment, such as mental health, child welfare, and homelessness.
It would be a great honor to have this opportunity, as this would be a stepping-stone in accomplishing my life long dream to become a Social Worker and serving those in need. Over the past years I have gain a tremendous amount of experience that have helped in shaping me to becoming competent in this field. I have also been exposed to a wide variety of population in which I have earned knowledge and a comprehensive amount of understanding. A particular experience was when I interned at St. Barnabas Hospital, there I gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about compiling shelter packages, and assisting clients in gaining access to long term or short term rehabilitation and providing other services.
For as long as I can remember, there has always been a pursuit to discover what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I had a deep conviction to help my community from a very young age, as I had witnessed my mother care for the innocent children who had crossed the border and become separated from there families. Making a change in the world, having a meaning and caring deeply, are just a few of the reasons I am drawn into the field of social work. Making an impact in just one person’s life is fulfilling to me. I want to help make things better, to help put ease to any suffering a person may be going through. Qualifications that are very important when going into the social work field are of the many such as empathy, listening, self-awareness, boundary settings, organization, persuasion, communication, social perceptiveness, and being able to de-compress or relax. My passion for helping and supporting those whose economic and financial standings have hindered their growth in our society, has driven me towards social work. I feel I have exhausted every possible avenue in my current degree field. Personal Statement I have never had a fight in my life, not until I was forcefully beaten and being fired with tear gas by riot polices, that time I knew that I have to fight back. This is a glimpse of May 1998 massive student’s demonstration in Indonesia demanding for wholesale political and law reform that turned into the most violent protest the country had ever experienced. I was a first-year law student at that time with an impulse motivation for bringing about an end to the three decades President Soeharto's authoritarian rule along with its systemic form of injustice law structure. Taking part in the movement was my conscious effort to be part of the cause.
I have become familiar with the components of the social work profession and it’s roles. During my field practice on the micro level, direct services are provided to address the concerns of these at risk clients through individual sessions and group facilitation. On the Mezzo level, indirect services are provided, by working with community base organizations and agency personnel to address our client’s issues and concerns. Collaborative services are provided through internal programs, which offer career development, GED class among others. I enjoy the aspect of being physically involved and seeing transformations of the clients who are ready to change.
Social work is a career that I have recently become interested in pursuing. I spent many years with misconceptions concerning the sector.
