When I started reading the book I thought… When I started reading the book I thought that the book was going to be a very violent book. The reason why I thought the book was going to violent was because in the first sentence it says “if you don’t sit your stinking useless butt back down in that shopping cart I swear I’ll burst your greasy face in”.
Throughout the memoir and use of personal exposure, Wiesel writes many similes relating to fire and flames. Usually, when similes about fire are made, they indicate destruction. On page thirty-four, Wiesel writes, “Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever” (Wiesel 34). This quote conveys that by the flames consuming his faith, Wiesel has lost one of the most important aspects of his life. A flame, a hot glowing body of ignited gas that is generated by something on fire, has the ability to scientifically completely burn up anything.
The Fires of Jubilee Book Review In 1975, prize-winning biographer Stephen B. Oates, wrote the Fires of Jubilee; Nat Turner’s Fierce Rebellion along with many of his thirteen published books and more than seventy articles. Oates book, Fires of Jubilee, brings back the history of slave rebellion in the eyes of a smart, talented, and gifted African American, Nat Turner. As Oates writes this book, he tells the life and struggles that was brought upon Turner and many of the other African Americans on their whim to become free people. With the abilities Nat had as a child, many people including him self were convinced that he was “chosen” from the Lord.
In this report I will explore the book Fire in The grove written by the author John C. Esposito. The book specifically describes the event of the fire, the reasons behind it, and who was responsible for this horrific disaster. The author explains that the main reasons of the fire were the structure of The Grove and the layout it was portrayed in. Later giving solutions on how to react if such incident happens as I explain further in the report.
At the beginning of the book Montage liked the fire. He didn’t think there was anything wrong with burning the books. When he and the other firefighters are burning the books he says, “It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed” (1). He is stating how he feels happy to destroy books.
In preparation for this paper I chose to read Fire in the ashes: twenty five years among the poorest children in America by Jonathan Kozol. In this book Kozol has followed these children and their family’s lives for the past twenty five years. In his writing Kozol portrays a point of view most from his background and standing would not be capable of having. He portrays what life is like for those who have been let down by the system that was meant to protect them. Kozols writing style can be very blunt at times, not for shock value, but for the sake of portraying these children’s realities, and not sugarcoating the inequalities that they are faced with.
Strength is essential in enduring a crisis. For most, true crisis is rare, but for a boy by the name of Vahan Kenderian, crisis has struck and it not will leave. Forgotten Fire, written by Adam Bagdasarian is a story about an adolescent Armenian boy who has everything taken away from him by the Armenian genocide. His family, wealth, and influence evaporates around him as the genocide progresses. He is alone and must fend for himself among people who hate his kind.
Water Pollution in San Joaquin Valley San Joaquin Valley is a place that stretches from 7 different counties such as Stanislaus to Kern county. San Joaquin Valley is known for their agriculture land since the late 19th century, which feeds most of the United States with the vegetables and fruits that are grown in the valley. The rich life of life in agricultural fields rely on the water supply that the valley contains such as groundwater and water on shore. Throughout the past decades, the water quality in San Joaquin Valley becomes to decrease from clean water to polluted water.
The book Burning Down the House: The End of Juvenile Prison, by Nell Bernstein is a compelling expose on the inherent evil of juvenile detention facilities. In her eye-opening account of the danger that lies within locking up this nation’s youth, Bernstein utilizes a plethora of rhetorical strategies to urge her audience to recognize and act on her claim. In writing this account on the heinousness of juvenile detention centers and why the system as a whole must be reformed, Bernstein uses personal cause and effect examples, studies and statistics, as well as concrete refutations to advocate the world for change. Bernstein starts her argument by providing readers with personal examples of the effects juvenile detention centers had on a handful of the kids she interviewed. Imagine being stranded on island with a bunch of strangers and no possessions. Having to leave your old life, family, and civilization all behind. Just imagine. Meanwhile, In William Golding’s novel, he uses symbolism to tell the allegory of a few boys whose flight crashed into a deserted island in which they were left to fend for themselves. In the novel Ralph and the fire both connect to the theme that Golding references as a good vs evil where evil ultimately overtakes humanity.
Government organizations often use symbols to portray their power or military strength. Writers also use symbols to convey a message to the reader. In his novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses symbols to help readers track the loss of civility of the boys. The fire is both a symbol of hope and the reckless behavior of the boys.
The Fires of Jubilee written by Stephen B. Oates is a book written about a young slave life from prepubescents to adulthood, or better yet a young smart boy to an older anarchy inducing man. The setting of the book takes place in Southampton County Virginia around the 1800’s. The main protagonist being a young slave called Nat Turner. The author very briefly gives details about Nat’s life as a newborn, mainly giving a brief summary of who his mother is. His mother was purchased to be a slave by a man named Benjamin Turner, a wealthy tide water planter.
What begins and has no end, and ends all that which begins? The answer is death. The majority of the time, death is a topic people tend to avoid or deviate from since it triggers uncertainty and fear. During the Holocaust, however, death lingered through the air as thick, black smoke does, suffocating its victims and cruelly seizing their lives. The grim reaper was a daily visitor in the ghettos, transports, and concentration camps in which about six million Jews perished.
The story “A Wall of Fire Rising” written by Edwidge Danticat has many similarities to the short story “Volar” written by Judith Ortiz Cofer. In “A Wall of Fire Rising” a poor Hattian family struggles to make ends meet on a daily basis. The father who is named Guy dreams of flying away in a hot air balloon to a better place where he can provide more for his family. Guy wants a better life, and his only escape of reality is through his son’s line recital for a play. Feeling hopeless, Guy makes an ultimate choice to escape reality by committing suicide by jumping off a hot air balloon in midair.
Hot-Air Balloon “A Wall of Fire Rising” written by Edwidge Danticat tells about the man named Guy and his indefatigable desire for freedom and a better life. Guy is the head of poor Haitian family which includes his wife Lili and their seven-year-old son Little Guy. The story takes place in post-revolutionary Haiti, where poverty and hunger still flourished. As most families, Guy’s family goes through a lot of struggles because there is no food and decent job; “a few hours work” that Guy finds at the sugar mill is not enough to support his family (Danticat 240). This feeling of hopelessness that Guy constantly experiences, weighs on his neck like a heavy load; thus, he saves himself thinking of the hot-air balloon which belongs to the
