For me, the romantic story behind Taj Mahal is an important factor that give me a positive view of Taj Mahal, and my social location also plays key role during this story telling. Even though people in China no longer carry out the practice of polygyny, a man marries more than one wife, this concept still influence people’s attitude towards female, especially in the suburb where people suffer the poverty. My gender identity as a female in the society where female somehow is a powerless group, I am also touched by the romantic story of Taj Mahal. Nowadays, Feminism is a sensitive topic in China and there are many organizations focus on protecting female’s right. The community I lived in and the education I have received in China all advocate …show more content…
The western backpackers experience a slow and deep conversation with the Taj also through the romantic gaze. Backpackers believe that photographing is a cliché when experiencing a new culture . They are more willing to leave their camera at home and use eyes to capture the image of the Taj . Backpackers want to use their eyes to remember the place they have seen, and create the unique conversation by the imagination decorated from memories. Using my social location to place myself at the conversation with the Taj, it is hard to decide which way will bring me a better conversation with the Taj, but I will definitely have the conversation through the romantic gaze. I am at a young age that will be willing to accept and try the way of travelling as a backpacker, which I have already tried once. However, my culture background, as the western tourists, is too different than the Taj, I really want to capture the images of the Taj, which can be the solid evidence of my conversation with Taj …show more content…
As everyone knows that, Taj Mahal is the most familiar symbol of India, however, Shah Jahan built the Taj as a monument of his Persian wife, who was a minority in India . The design of the Taj also uses the Persian style, such as the using of double dome. In this way, the two cultures connected together and Taj Mahal as a result of mix of culture, it represented a perfect combination of cultures, which further create a multi-cultural environment. In my perspective, the best way to create the multi-cultural environment is to put different cultures together and let them have connection with each other directly. In this way, the people can get chance to know and learn deeper things about different cultures and religions. According to my social locations, I had limited knowledge about Christian before I came to St. Lawrence. In Chian, Christian is minority, so I don’t really have chance to know this religion. Although St. Lawrence is non-denominational today, it was founded by leaders of the Universalist Church. And the buildings at campus, especially the chapel, brings me the appeal of different culture, which makes me want to learn more things about it and fit in as soon as possible. I ended up joining the Community Gospel Choir,
In the first section of Chapter 1 of Encountering God: A Spiritual Journey from Bozeman to Banaras, the author Diana Eck discusses her personal experience from exploring the encounter of Bozeman and Banaras. The author raises many interesting questions in this section about religious differences, what it means to be of a certain religion, if the label of being a certain religion matters or defines oneself, what another culture or religion means to an individual of another religion, and how members of different religions view one another. Eck explains how she was raised as a Christian in Bozeman under an influence of the church, and during her college years, she travelled to Banaras in India and she experienced a challenge in her faith by observing
With the school’s student body being so close to the school it causes a more diverse church setting. But with the school being so diverse it’s hard to know your students and their preferences because it’s so many different cultures to try to adapt
As a freshman, I joined the chorus as a soprano. It was slightly intimidating that year because I was the youngest person in my section. Everyone
Women’s rights has always been a prevalent issue throughout history, this topic was usually ignored and justified by men. However this all changes in the late 19th and early 20th century, when women no longer considered themselves the lesser gender, and those silly justifications by men are rebuked and found false. Two historic advocates for women’s rights were Sojourner Truth, and Bahithat al-Badiya. Though both women came from different backgrounds, they still held similar views on gender equality. Sojourner Truth was a former slave from New York.

Yuhui Li's Women's Movement and Change in Women's Status in China argues that the main reason for male intellectual's support of the women's movement in China was their belief that bound feet and lack of education hurt a woman's ability to raise a strong future population. While this document shows the desire for women's equality in China, it also shows that women were still expected to keep similar roles such as raising children and maintaining the household. (Doc. 5) This document is a secondary source and offers a more conclusive
Hardships endured by Two Afghan women. If we could all put our problems in a pile and see other people's; we'd take ours back. According to Sighn (2013) "women in Afghanistan have been going through gender equity in its severe form since ages. Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns depicts the plight of women behind the walls of Afghanistan during several invasions in the country".
Lawrence Church were: welcoming, community, and faithfulness. As I had observed throughout the service, the congregation of St. Lawrence Church was rather friendly as well as inviting, and readily able to accept anyone into their community. Also, I noticed the congregation seemed to be more of a “family” or community as there were lots of people having conversations both inside and outside the church even after mass was over. Furthermore, the church as well as the congregation were always willing to help those in need within their community. In addition, I found most of the congregation took their faith as a Catholic as well as the duties of a Catholic quite seriously.
Despite my passion for athletics, I have spent the majority of my high school career involved in show choir. I participate in the Executive Session at Sauk Prairie High School. Show choir incorporates training under professional choreographers, undergoing numerous voice lessons, and traveling the country for competitions. This self-disciplinary activity pushes me to work hard and strive for perfectionism while taking leadership roles in a professional environment. Furthermore, show choir allows me to impact others through my performance and to take risks.
Equality of genders is a basic human right that all should posses. However, in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, the reader explores Afghanistan’s true nature of extreme gender inequality towards women and how it affects all the characters within the novel. The novel explores how within a marriage, women have unequal rights, undergo major amounts of physical abuse, and are emotionally and mentally tormented by their very own supposedly beloved husbands. A marriage is defined as a union of two people as partners in a personal relationship.
The issue of women’s rights and how different societies and cultures deal with it had been on the table for many centuries. In the United States of America during the 1800s, women began to move toward and demand getting equal rights as men, they decided to speak up and fight for their stolen rights. In the 1960s, continued working toward their goal, women broadened their activities through the women’s rights movement which aimed to help them in gaining their right to receive education, occupy the same jobs that were once titled only for men, and get an access to leadership positions. The women’s rights movement has a great impact on women today, although it started a long time ago, but it did not stop and women are reaping their fruit today,
Chinese women suffer from the unfair notion for thousands of years. The basic requirements of being virtuous women are “Three Obediences and Four Virtues (三从四德)”. The “Three Obediences” were “obey your father before marriage (未嫁从父); obey your husband when married (既嫁从夫); and obey your sons in widowhood (夫死从子)”. And the “Four Virtues” were “Female virtues (妇德)”, “Female words (妇言)”, “Female appearances (妇容)” and “Female work (妇功)”. (Sun, 2015).
According to the famous sociologists Sylvia Walby, patriarchy is “a system of social structure and practices in which men dominate, oppress and exploit women”. Women’s exploitation is an age old cultural phenomenon of Indian society. The system of patriarchy finds its validity and sanction in our religious beliefs, whether it is Hindu, Muslim or any other religion. For instance, as per ancient Hindu law giver Manu, “Women are supposed to be in the custody of their father when they are children, they must be under the custody of their husband when married and under the custody of her son in old age or as widows.
This thesis consists of Hanif’s portrait of women and their marginalized positions in the society and economic, social and religious pride and prejudices towards women in Pakistani society which is an important theme of his novels. He belongs to those who are proof of that some people can tell the truth more comprehensively and authentically with fiction than facts. In his second novel Our Lady of Alice Bhatti (2012), he discusses the battle and determination of a woman fitting in with minority goes out in a patriarchal society and endures accordingly. In a male dominated society women in Pakistan are in lower position than men , they are always on the periphery, and are subordinated to men and are in debased positions both within the house and outside the house. Alam (2011) shows by her study that women’s unequal positions contrasted with men make them weaker both out in the open and private circles.
