“Thank You Ma'am” Interpretive Response “Thank You Ma’m” is short story written by Langston Hughes. The main characters are Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones and Roger. Mrs. Jones is a large woman who works at a beauty salon. Mrs. Jones lives in a rooming house, so she doesn’t have a lot of money. Roger is a skinny 14-15 year old boy who tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse. After this incident Mrs. Jones takes Roger home. The reason Mrs. Jones takes Roger home is she sees part of her former self in him and wanted to help. First, after Roger tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse, she says later in the story she told Roger, “I have done things, too, which I would not tell you son” (pg. 39, lines 116-117) This shows that they are similar and Mrs. Jones

After reading both, I can tell the similarities are minor but the differences are pronounced. The stories are very unalike each other. “Thank you ma’am” is set farther back in times than “the scholarship jacket”.
There is a book called "Memoir" written by a man named Zinsser. Zinsser wrote this book to give people advice about how to write a memoir and gave three pieces of guidance. Those are, to break the text down into small pieces, write it for yourself, and to only have one perspective in your book or journal. Now for " Thank You M'am" it is about an old woman named Mrs. Jones, who is helping this teen boy, who tried to steal her pocketbook. The text "Thank You M'am" is a weak example of Zinssers advice.

In the story “ Thank You Ma 'am ” I believe that Mrs Jones is caring because Mrs. Jones brings Roger into her house, and tries to help Roger. The most obvious why Mrs.Jones is caring is because she lets Roger into her house even when he tried to steal her purse, I know I would never just let him in my house if he tried to steal my purse I would of called the police. First of all she brings Roger to her house and then makes him dinner. I would never make a boy dinner who tried to steal my purse.

Have you ever got caught doing something wrong, and then something good comes out of the bad situation? In the short story Thank You Ma’am by Langston Hughes, this is exactly what happens to Roger. Roger was caught by Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones while attempting to steal her purse, wanting her money. Instead of calling the cops, and turning Roger in, Mrs. Jones decides to pamper him, while teaching him a lesson of manners. Mrs, Jones takes a bad situation of Roger trying to steal her purse and turns it into a good situations by showing Roger the proper way to get what he wants.
A central theme in the short story “Thank you Ma 'am” by Langston Hughes is a little kindness goes a long way. One act of kindness can change a person’s life forever. Her unnecessary kindness made a major impact on Roger and changes him. As the story progresses, we see that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones shows empathy and kindness for Roger. That kindness appears to pass onto Roger near the end of the story.

After that, she caught him with a strong, bold arm and took him to her house. While there, she talks with the boy and feeds him.
Luella Bates Washington Jones as she drags Roger home with her. Once inside, she asks him to tell her his name and to wash his face in the sink. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones forgives him with her motherly nature by saying, “ You ought to be my son I would teach you right from wrong. ”(Hughes Pg.1) She is a powerful presence in Roger’s life for a short period of time.
