“Thank you M’am” is a piece of Prose written by Langston Hughes. Roger tries to steal Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones’s purse to get some Blue suede shoes. Instead of taking Roger to the authorities, she shows Roger kindness. The author uses suspense through setting, mystery, and dilemma. Without a doubt, the author uses the setting in the text by, stating that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones was walking home alone when someone came up behind her and tried to steal her purse.
Mrs. Jones gave Roger what he wanted because she had been there and she sympathized with him. She also gave him an important lesson. If you can sympathize with others, than you should help them out. No one should have to go through their troubles alone. They should have others to help them get through.
Jones actions also reveal her character. In this sentence, “ then it will get washed this evening”, she gives off a sense of care and desire to help the young boy (122). This boy just tried to steal from her, but she has the heart ti teach him a lesson and help him get cleaned up. Another example comes from a part in the short story when the boy was at her house. “ The door was open he could make a dash for it down the hall”, Mrs. Jones did not care if he ran, she was only going to help him, and if he did not want her offerings, so be it (123).
Imagine you try and steal a woman’s bag in the middle of the night, but you get caught. 1 hour later, your walk out of the woman’s house with $10 in your hand and a respect for all people. In the story “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, this is exactly what happens. A boy gets caught stealing a woman’s purse. You would think the woman would take the boy to jail, but instead, she teaches him a lesson and he leaves with a new attitude about life.

A central theme in the short story “Thank you Ma 'am” by Langston Hughes is a little kindness goes a long way. One act of kindness can change a person’s life forever. Her unnecessary kindness made a major impact on Roger and changes him. As the story progresses, we see that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones shows empathy and kindness for Roger. That kindness appears to pass onto Roger near the end of the story.
How does Mrs. Jones affect Roger’s life now that she has taught him a lesson about stealing? In the story “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones takes Roger and kicks him on the sidewalk and she also gives him a half nelson. She takes him to her house and teaches him a lesson on stealing. If Mrs. Jones hadn’t done that, they wouldn’t of gotten to know each other and maybe Roger would be out stealing someone else’s purse. If Mrs. Jones just kicked him and left him on the sidewalk, she wouldn’t of told him her own stories of bad decisions she had made when she was younger.
What modern feminists refuse to admit is that feminism is only one side of a two-sided coin of inequality. A “movement” that advocates for the rights of one gender over another is sexist and unequal by nature. If feminists were striving for equality, then they wouldn’t be FEMinists. Being feminist, simply put, means that you want women to not only be equal to, but greater than men.. Thus, I believe that feminism is a poorly made masquerade to cover women’s desire to control men.

It presents the readers, the idea of goodness, the theme of trust, forgiveness, and kindness. Hughes is able to convert a language that is easier to understand by characterizing the context of story, advancing important themes, and using dialogue among the characters. Trust is one of themes that stood out while analyzing the short story. Though Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones has been victimized Roger worries that she won’t trust him, so he moves.
Small lies that we subconsciously tell ourselves mean nothing in the grand scheme of things, but if we tell ourselves small fibs on a regular bases over small and miniscule problems, what’s to stop us from saying bigger lies when bigger issues arise? One of the biggest issues, gender discrimination, must be abolished since women struggle with the gender pay gap, and unfair treatment in sports, while men struggle with the gender discrimination in divorce cases, mostimes leaving their gender as the main reason the mother receives custody over the child or children. Women may be able to participate in the same profession as men, but the large gap in pay between genders fails to attribute to the positives of said situation. The members of the Institute for Women 's Policy Research have used statistics over the past hundred years to conclude that: “Hispanic women will have to wait until 2233 and Black women will wait until 2124 for equal pay” (Pay Equity). The IWPR states that, “According to our research, if change continues at the same slow pace as it has done for the past fifty years, it will take 44 years—or until 2059—for women to finally reach pay parity.”
Respect can be considered a very broad term in society. Many people want to be treated with respect, and become displeased when someone is disrespectful. That being said, what is respect? According to a dictionary, respect is a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, achievements, opinions, beliefs, etc. Of course everyone in society differs in views and beliefs.
