A study done by William R. Doyle, an assistant professor of higher education at Vanderbilt University claims, that the number of women in the workforce affects the size of the wage gap. He concludes that as the number of women in the workforce rose, therefore, the gap decreased due to more women comprising a part of the economy. Another reason that the gender wage gap got smaller over time was due to congress enacting the Equal Pay Act. This is because throughout history the government, although unsuccessfully, have tried to get rid of or lessen the gender pay gap. According to Paul Weiler a professor of law at Harvard Law school, during president Kennedy’s time in office Kennedy encountered problems with the gender pay gap and imposed a ban on it he called the Equal Pay act of 1963.
However, women and men now receive equal pay because of a campaign called the Gender Pay Gap Campaign. Before, not many women had jobs, but there is a changing pattern in employment tradition for women. The share of female graduates went up, legal protection for all sexual harassment was established. Although, some areas still need to be addressed for lack of child care facilities. 2.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, on average among full time workers, men work 8.75 hours a week and women work 8.01 hours. The difference totals to 9% more hours put in on average by men. This is a major reason for why a gap exists between men and women, as there is a distinct difference in time put in by employees by gender. Full time jobs are considered to be a minimum of 35 hours working a week, and the “80 cents to a man’s dollar” statistic simply takes the earnings of all the individuals in that pay range. It becomes clear then that the statistic is ignoring a rather large work time disparity and making what a man earns in nearly nine hours equivalent to what a female earned in eight.
For African American women, however, another 65 years is added merely because the color of their skin is different from others. The worst though is for Hispanic women; equality in pay is not expected to come to them until 2233 (Pay). This all goes to show truly how unique each case can become. An analysis by Oxfam Canada and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives states that the gender wage gap is not merely because the stereotypical woman works less than men or because women have a different degree of education or experience. The analysis states that “Even when all of these factors are considered, the result remains the same: a wage gap” (Grant).
The wage gap has dwindled over the years; however, the progress has slowed down in the past two decades. “At the rate of change between 1960 and 2016, women are expected to reach pay equity with men in 2059” (AAUW). “If change continues at the slower rate seen since 2001, women will not reach pay equity with men until 2119” (AAUW). Decreasing the wage gap will boost the economy, consumer spending will increase, and employers will attract top-tier employees that will stay for the long-term. Susan B. Anthony was known in the 1800’s for promoting women’s voting rights
With having to pay more for products that need to be used for their daily hygiene and services like drying clean, it's just something that shouldn’t exist. In addition to paying more for products, women are commonly paid less than men “In 2015, female full-time workers made only 79 cents for every dollar earned by men, a gender wage gap of 21 percent.” (Pay Equity & Discrimination) While society keeps telling us that gender equal is strong, the price tags in products as well as salary show just how far we are from it. Taking charge and being aware of these problems in society will eventually led to changes. Will the end of inequality of the sexes ever be achieved? It’s definitely something to
Or will women continue to be paid less than men? With more and more awareness being brought up about these issues, one day there will be equal rights for all women no matter what their race
The gender pay gap is nothing new in America. Even though John F Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act in 1953, in an attempt to abolish gender based wages, but it has been over 50 years since that act has been in effect and women still make a quarter less than men do. The fight is nowhere near being over with, the National Organization for Women estimate the wage gap will not close until 2058, over 100 years after Kennedy’s Equal Pay Act attempted to abolish the gender pay gap. Women should not
What's more, the company has established a dress code for female reservations agents, but not for the male agents. If Kim decides to file a discrimination complaint against her employer, the Equal Pay Act would apply to the pay difference between women and men. Differences The Equal Pay Act is different from the Employment Protection Act in relation to employees being raciall discriminated. Part-time employees are covered under the Act, but an employee could claim discrimination only if other part-time workers performing similar functions and with the same level of seniority receive different pay or
The male audience, in turn, can’t help but believe it is now their duty to be more active in the effort for women’s rights. She also claims, it will take 75 years before women can be paid the same as men for the same work, fifteen and a half million girls will be married as children within sixteen years, and it will be 2086 by the time all African girls get secondary education. Watson barrages the audience with all of this information to
