There have been many myths that people have handed down over the course of human history. One such myth is the Greek myth of Hades specifically, of that of Cerberus the guard dog of Hades. Cerberus was the offspring of Echidna and Typhon and was often described as having three heads, a serpent for a tail, and snakes protruding from parts of his body. Though this was not always the case, in the earliest description in Hesiod's theogony from 8th - 7th century B.C., he was described having fifty heads, while later when described by Pindar in 522- 433 B.C. he had one hundred heads. When referring to the heads specifically when described by Apollodorus, a Greek scholar, he had three dog heads and the heads of snakes on his back. When described

The Buk Mask originates from the Mabuiag Island in the Torres Strait. The mask was made around the mid-to late 19th century, out of a indigenous materials such as turtle shell, wood, raffia fiber, feathers, and other shells. A male Torres Strait Islander would have worn this mask during a ritual or ceremony involving a performance. The Buk Mask is divided into three registers and is an anthropomorphic and zoomorphic artwork. The bottom of the mask contains a human face, possible depicting a hero of the Kara culture or an ancestor. Above it, is the body of the frigate bird which may have been a totem for the ancestor and finally at the very top, the feathers. The display of both human and animal imagery is common in western Torres Strait masks.

Pedro Lopez , also known as “The Monster of the Andes”, was born on October 8, 1949 in Tolima, Colombia. He was known for being a serial killer for murdering about one hundred ten to three hundred young girls, and a rapist for raping about three hundred young girls in South America. He was also in the Guinness World Records for being the "most prolific serial killer". His mother, Benilda López De Casteneda, was a prostitute at about the age of twelve and his father, Midardo Reyes, was a member of the Colombian Conservative Party (something dealing with politics) where they lived in poverty and political violence. Lopez was the seventh child out of thirteen children. Before Lopez was born, his father had been trying to defend a grocery store from a wayward mob where
For over 400 years people have been seeing large, hair-covered, man-like animals in the wilderness areas of North America. These facts, taken together, suggest an animal, probably a primate, that exists today in very low population densities.
As part of my ongoing quest to understand the intersectional and multi-faceted world we live in, I was drawn to the McIntosh reading “White Privilege:Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” and its powerful commentary on racial biases affecting women in our modern world. I loved the way she spoke about the many simple things that she as a white person doesn’t need to worry about as a default, which non-white people wouldn’t,like the assumption that her tax audits would be executed fairly and without ludicrous scrutiny. This reading inspired me to venture out into my home town and look for an event that spoke to the same issues.I found myself in a small art gallery which was featuring various pieces by indigenous women. The exhibit had a particular focus on the
A story that had a profound impact on me during my childhood years would have to be a story told by my mom that just terrified me. I was told this story about of the age of 4. The story that I am talking about is an urban legend called La Llorona. My understanding about this urban legend is that she is a Hispanic legend and is known as “the weeping woman” in America. In Mexico, la Llorona is described as an awful mother who drowned her 2 kids in a river. I was scared of her ever since my mother told me her story. The reason why I was told her story is because it was late at night and I was outside and would not listen to my mom to go inside. So the urban legend la Llorona was ineffective and traumatizing to me.
ou’re walking through the woods, you hear a crackle of leaves and twigs behind as you turn around to try and video this mysterious creature, as it darts off into the woods without a trace. This “mysterious” creature is bigfoot, or a sasquatch. These are the reasons I believe bigfoot is fake.
The world is in constant change and social changes are necessary in order to maintain a balance within social groups and communities. I am a 46 Mexican and as Mexican I can say that Mexican culture is full of beliefs and taboos. Gender, age, social class, language and spiritual practice have influenced my life. Mexican culture is one of the cultures with a marked gender inequality. Mexican culture is full of maleness. I have faced the maleness since I was a child in an indirect way. My mother was never allowed to work during the 13 years of marriage. My father said that women have to stay home taking care of the children and house chores. It was not a problem with my mother and my siblings because women in my mother’s close social group were housewives, but after my parents got
Yeti. Sasquatch. Bigfoot. The names instantly conjure images of enigmatic apelike creatures existing at the thresholds of human experience. We imagine them as huge, hairy, and walking on two legs, a perception developed throughout generations of sightings and crystallized in 1967 by Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin in their brief but historic film ( Higgins ). Bigfoot has many characteristics that make him stand out. First, there is evidence that authenticates Bigfoot existence. However, there are skeptics that has been corroborated to insure Bigfoot is a mythical creature. But, the media has a big role in proving bigfoot’s existence or mythological existence. In summary, while many people believe that Bigfoot is not real, there are many media shows and people endorsing that Bigfoot exists and they are hunting him down. Many people believe that the shows are fake and that people are just dressing in costumes.
For many years, people have said that they have seen Unidentified flying objects, otherwise known as UFOs. From random farmers, to the military, to even a president of the United States, Jimmy Carter. There are famous sightings where the investigations have lasted years and months on trying to figure out if the sighting was in fact, true or not. Although there are images of these sightings, they are criticized to be nothing more than a blurred image or the work of Photoshop. The most famous UFO sighting is known as The Crash Near Roswell. This event occurred in the first week of July 1947.
Though the Inca empire was great in population, there was a difference between the daily life of an Inca and an inca subject. Incas had certain privileges that others were not allowed. They wore particular kinds of headbands and earplugs so large that it stretched out the earlobe. Inca subjects were subjected to the orders of the reigning inca king, who also claimed ownership over their land and labor rights. There were several different kinds of citizens in the inca empire. Social status was based on kinship and occupation instead of income. The Incas had the the highest social status. They included members of royal ayllus and non royal ayllus, or "inca-by-blood ', those who lived in or near Cuzco but were not related to the kings. Their ayllus were relatively lower in status. Larger groups called 'Inca-by-privilege ' were also included in the Inca
I discovered my love for English throughout my Puente classes. It exposed me to my passion for writing and learning new things. An example of this was when we read “ Borderlands” by Gloria Anzladúa which deals with how we identify ourselves composed of poems and written text. Explaining her story of being a Chicana; someone who is Mexican American dealing with the differences of both cultures. As a Chicana, I am grateful that Puente introduced us to this type of material. Assisting us to further our comprehension of the subject and ourselves. Being a Chicana is a person who despite being a minority and lack of privileges they have the strongest passion to succeed.
The Sonoran King Snake has a pattern of red, black and white bands, and has a cream-colored nose , these features can help you easily tell the difference between this snake , and the others in its family. These snakes have a relatively calm nature , and live in the high elevations like the mountain ranges in Arizona, although they have been seen in valleys and grasslands occasionally. These snake like to spend most of their time on the ground, but are extremely good climbers and so will sometimes be in high tree tops , and even boulders.
