Canadian lives changed drastically during the early 1900s as their alliance with Britain forced them into the first world war. When it was first introduced men were ecstatic to enlist and join the Canadian military. Many young men considered this to be a great opportunity to be adventurous and heroic individuals and show their nationalism towards Canada. After the first two years their excitement to join the war began to dwindle. Wounded men would come back from the war and tell horrible stories about what life was like and the terrible conditions they were forced to live in.
The severe economic conditions of the depression brought down and impacted numerous countries including Canada. When Bennett was running for prime minister he had no idea of the economic disasters that would be approaching and was unable to discover or utilize any effective methods to deal with them. During the 1930 election Robert campaigned to combat the aggressive measures of the great depression and when he was elected for the conservative party he immediately distributed $20 million toward helping the unemployed citizens of Canada. Unfortunately, the depression conveyed and produced many problems that no one was capable of adequately handling. Pierre Elliott Trudeau has rightly been described as one of Canada’s most controversial Prime Ministers. Elected in 1968, this former law professor and writer used his charisma and intellect to dominate Canadian politics for almost two decades. His long stint in power as prime minister is remarkable given Trudeau’s often unpredictable behavior and disastrous initiatives. Prime Minister Trudeau came into power during a very tumultuous time in Canada’s history. Forced to deal with crisis after crisis, he enacted many polarizing policies that were popular with some but despised by others.

Few countries were affected as severely as Canada during what became known as the Dirty Thirties, due to Canada’s heavy dependence on raw material and farm exports, combined with a crippling Prairies drought. Widespread losses of jobs and savings ultimately transformed the country by triggering the birth of social welfare, a variety of populist political movements, and a more activist role for government in the economy. ”The economic state of the country met with the large desire for change led many Canadians to make desperate choices to make their lives better. This desire and the birth of the Dionne quintuplets created a large jump in morale for many Canadians, this new found hope made Canadians want more of the quintuplets.
Overcrowding There are now more children in foster care and not enough families to look after them. In 2014, Quebec had 5744 foster families and 8523 children and adolescents in foster care. Since there are not enough foster homes, children are overcrowded in the available houses.
Defining Moments in Canada Canada today is very different from the Canada that was first established by the first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, in 1867. Even after WW1 and WW2, Canada as a country had not yet become what we know it as today. Since the 1950s, Canada’s identity was shaped by defining moments that illustrate growth and change. This can be seen through the following three examples: the baby boom, the 60s Scoop and Omar Khadr. First of all, the baby boom of the 50s shaped Canada’s identity and illustrated growth and change.
Baby boomers are the demographic cohort, known as the generation that makes up the substantial portion of the world’s population. Individuals born during the time of 1946 to 1964 has lived in environments where smoking lead to a detrimental impact in their later years. As the third leading cause of death, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is common among the older population. This disease is the leading cause of both morbidity and mortality. Leading to a consensus that older adults (particularly baby boomers) are at a great risk of COPD because they grew up in an era where smoking was fashionable, cigarettes were provided during the wars, and exposure to secondhand smoke was tremendous.
A census was taken in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 & 2011 which stated the families whom had 1, 2, 3 or 4 & more children (ages 0-17) living dependently on the parents. (image and information sourced from AIFS) Families with one to two children constantly remained the most common across the five years each census was recorded; this combined accounted for the 77% of families in 1991, and increasing to 80% in 2006 and 2011. Around 40% of all families with children under 18 years had two children in this age group, while the proportion with only one child in this age group increased from 37% in 1991 to 40% in 2011.
The great depression had affect Canada socially, as population changes occurred, as less immigrants go to canada, and birth rate changes, as well as death rates. Canada’s birth rate dropped from 13.1 live births per 1000 people in 1930 to only 9.7 per 1000 people in 1937. The lowest ratio until the 1960s. This affected the nation significantly, as the population decreases, not much children would grow up to work for the nation, thus creating less income and therefore not increasing the nation’s GDP as much as it can.
In 2006, former Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was honoured as being Canada’s most environmentally friendly Prime Minister. Nearly ten years later, it is likely that Mulroney would still be able to hold on to that claim. Following Mulroney’s government, the environmental policies of both Jean Chretien, and his successor, Paul Martin’s Liberals and Stephen Harper’s Conservatives have been lacklustre, at best. Despite being involved in many international environmental initiatives, such as the Kyoto Protocol, Canada has been criticized for its poor environmental policy.
Social Welfare Policy and Child Protection – Strength and Limitations Since last two decades Canada being experienced softer and harder forms of neo-liberal economic impetus (McKeen, 2006). Many of these reforms targeted social benefits and divided marginalized people into deserved and undeserved category (McKeen, 2006). At a large level, social policies are shaped by the exploration of dominant ideas about a social issue. Existing political views and the interest of the dominant policy community are predominantly influencing policy making (McKeen, 2006). The mainstream discourses for solutions of social problems and policy outcomes are increasingly underrepresented and narrow down the focus of social welfare in Canada (McKeen, 2006).
Final Thesis The Baby Boomer era has decreased since War War 1, leaving mostly the government and Canadians distress about how this event will impact societies economy and the debts our generation has to pay. Supporting argument #1 With the peak in births during the Baby Boomer era, this has resulted in financial instability within society. Supporting argument #2 Society as a whole is experience difficulties managing the effects of the aging Baby Boomers. Today, Canada is seen as a multicultural and peaceful nation that has evolved over the course of history. This great nation would never have been possible without the impact that former Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson left on this country. His achievements and insights profoundly affected and shaped Canada’s nation. First, peacekeeping is an important part of Canada’s heritage and a reflection of its fundamental beliefs that Pearson implemented after dealing with world changing situations and winning a Nobel Prize. Also, his contributions as a liberal leader as well as the flaws and controversy with Diefenbaker did in fact define this country.
When Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier stated, “As the 19th century was that of the United States, so I think the 20th century shall be filled by Canada”, the decades that followed provided his statement to be true as Canada became an independent and strong nation. The battlefields in World War One were a defining moment for Canada as their forces fought as one nation for the first time, instead of under British Command. Also, at the end of the war, Canada was recognized at the Peace Conference and signed the Treaty of Versailles as an independent country. The Canadian population is made up of several, diverse generations, the baby boom generation is the most defining, and most significant of all. The baby boom is a sudden rise in the number of labours. When an unexpected fall in the amount of labours is identified it is considered over. The soldiers coming back from World War II were racing to arise their families which resulted in the Baby Boom. Why was the baby boom the most defining and significant moment in Canadian history?
