The Odyssey Women's Role In Society

"Medea" is a revolutionary tragic drama written by Euripides in 430 BC. The whole play focuses on Medea, a powerful and brave woman who is symbolising the women of ancient Greek. Her influence in Corinth reflects the male dominance in the Greek society. Her values are identical to a man's values thus she is considered as a contrast of Greek women who were suppressed by their men. She committed crimes which were barbarous yet she was able to leave behind a civilised message of women's rights and their respect.

Cleopatra was in it for the fame and glory, as well as for the power that came along with it. This made her a fierce and respected leader of her time. About a millenia and a half years later came another of the world 's most famous female leaders. Although she was more a teenager than a woman, Jeanne D’Arc, known as Joan of Arc, was one of the most legendary female figures ever. Joan barely even had a childhood.

The issue of women’s rights and how different societies and cultures deal with it had been on the table for many centuries. In the United States of America during the 1800s, women began to move toward and demand getting equal rights as men, they decided to speak up and fight for their stolen rights. In the 1920s, women got to leave the house more often, and it was looked at as normal to not be a house mother all the time. Women realized that there was more out there for them, and that they should be treated like men. The first right they desired was the one to vote. The fight for women’s suffrage officially began at the Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention in 1848, and continued for over seventy-two years before it was achieved.

Over generations, the role of women in society has shifted and changed immensely, improving upon many aspects of rights and values that women have. The changes occurred gave women opportunities to provide ideas, to have the same rights as men, giving women freedom, leading to many contributions of many significant and valuable events. But from current roles of women being equal to those of men, how women stood in ancient society significantly differs and contrast with ours today. Throughout history, the role and significance of women were always outweighed by the dominance and influence of men. The role of women in ancient times varied throughout, depending on the place and area in the world, in which women had different roles and impacts on their own society.

Hatshepsut was one of the most influential and powerful pharaohs of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt. She faced an abundance of discrimination and prejudice during her rule solely because she was a commanding female ruler in a time when patriarchy was the dominating norm. Therefore she had to overcome many preconceived notions about women in power that were constructed by generations of male pharaohs before her. Despite many obstacles, like an eradication attempt, Hatshepsut altered the social standards regarding women in Ancient Egyptian society. In doing so, she proved that women could be self-sufficient and fully functioning leaders, gave divine legitimacy to their rules, and carved a path for future female rulers throughout the world.

Along with the belief that women played a secondary role to men in Greek society, the female characters displayed certain traits that could not be shown by the men. In addition, the male characters play the most significant roles in this poem, but without the support of the females in "The Odyssey", Odysseus would not have made it through his journey. The author depicts women as strong subjects, they are real substantive characters. Most women in this poem are treated with the respect and seriousness they deserve. Despite traditions of ancient society, the author characterizes the women as the real counterparts of men, they have real feelings, real plans and are able to accomplish men on their own.
