When a person picks up a Horror Novel for the first time, they have no idea what is in store for them. Certainly they know the book will be quote unquote “scary”, but of course it will be scary. The sole purpose of that book is to scare the reader. Many horror books attempt but are unable to scare the reader, or if they do scare the reader, the book is not very well written. The three books that this essay is focusing on all do a brilliant job of not only terrifying the reader, but also using and exploiting many literary devices that make the book stick in the reader's memory.

Walter Dean Myers uses a teenage boy writing a movie to prove to his audience he is not a monster. They both take the reality of a situation and twist it to fit a different truth. Just because Edgar Allan Poe died in 1849, that hasn’t stopped people of today from being obsessed with his creepy, suspenseful poems. Poe’s writing has inspired over 250 ideas for film and television. Since his work is so timeworn, it’s open to the public domain to be adapted for amateur writers and filmmakers. His questionable writing has made many people uncomfortable during his time and still today. Even though many popular television shows have recreated and told Poe’s frightening stories like the Halloween episode of “The Simpsons” by far the creepiest one was surprisingly a cartoon short of “The Tell Tale Heart”.
Rather than writing a story of love, Edgar Allan Poe took a heart, typically a symbol of love, and created “The Tell-Tale Heart”, a twisted and dark story of a heart with ever-changing moods. First, the text says “It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening. . .” (79). It also says, “Upon the eighth night, I was more than usually cautious in opening the door” (79). With these two quotes, the author of the story creates a mood of anxiety by describing how cautiously the narrator put his head through the door.
The Tell Tale Heart is narrated anonymously yet extremely in depth, leaving the reader with an ominous perspective. The use of first person creates a mysterious interpretation for the readers as we construe the tale from an individuals point of view, looking into the story. The story builds up upon the narrator’s guilt over intentionally killing an innocent man. A suspicious neighbor cries out for help after hearing a shriek and three policemen investigate the situation. During the climax, the narrator is at the greatest intensity of guilt and craze.

A gothic is a great example of fear in literature. The settings, characters, and story line has a way of making the reader invested by hooking to their emotions.
