Friar uses personification along with other literary devices that helps the reader understand the theme. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses elements of language in Friar Laurence’s speech to convey the idea that everything is both good and evil. In the first half of the soliloquy, Friar talks about the sky in a way that demonstrates how it is good and evil, like the light of the sun and the darkness of the moon. Friar starts his Soliloquy by saying, “The grey-ey’d morn smiles on the frowning night, Check’ring the Eastern clouds with streaks of light” (2.3.1-2).

Many scholars consider Shakespeare the master of figurative language. In Romeo and Juliet, he uses different forms of figurative language to help create tension and add to the tragedy.
Within the Play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare there is a power thirsty, quick-tempered, and a hot-headed character named Tybalt who despises Montagues. Tybalt’s personality and motivation of violence and greed for power can be inferred by his use of figurative language. When Tybalt encountered Benvolio who came between the fight of the servants of Montague and Capulet, he shouts, "What, drawn, and talk of peace! I hate the word, As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee: Have at thee coward. " Tybalt expresses his hate about peace by comparing it to Benvolio, Montagues, and hell.

Through metaphors and personification during Friar Lawerence’s herb-picking scene, Shakespeare characterizes the Friar as a sensible and aware character. While the Friar is picking herbs, the Friar gives the herbs human-like characteristics, he also describes how the earth is where nature lives and where it dies, this metaphor, and personification reveals the Friar's character traits.

The two of them go through many obstacles and hardships just to meet with one another. However, the rivalry between the Montagues and Capulets get in the way of their love. The author uses descriptive writing to portray the love between Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare uses literary devices, such as the metaphor, personification, oxymoron, and apostrophe, to show the lengths Romeo and Juliet would go to for each other’s love.
In William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, ACT 3, scene 1 is a crucial in creating the circumstances that lead to the tragedy of the play. Shakespeare incorporates tragedy into Romeo and Juliet with the use of plot, language devices and aesthetic features. With these devices Shakespeare integrates poetic dialogue, forbidden love and devastating tragedy into the script of the play. In ACT 3, scene 1, Tybalt kills Mercutio and is killed by Romeo who is then banished by the prince, these unfortunate events contribute to the tragedy of the play. The scene begins with Benvolio and Mercutio hanging out, mocking each other and insulting the Capulets.
The theme of love is often associated with peace and kindness. However, in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the two lovers’ suicidal impulse shows love as a cause of self-destructive violence, as seen through their thoughts, words and actions. From the very beginning of the play, Shakespeare, is holding fate to blame for the death of the two lovers. In the line “from forth the fatal loins of these two foes a pair of star-crossed lovers take their life” foreshadowing, metaphor and alliteration are used to show how Romeo and Juliet’s love would end in tragedy. Foreshadowing is used to create suspense leading to a later scene in the play where the lover’s suicide. The metaphor “star-crossed lovers” suggest the prophetic alignments of the stars are against them. The lovers are ill-fated from the start.

People in this world lie all the time because they think that they are helping instead of telling the truth. When the truth comes out in the society people are more hurt than if a person just told the truth instead of lying. Once in fair Verona, a bloody feud took the lives of two attractive young lovers and some of their family and friends. The Montague/Capulet feud will forever go down in literary history as an ingenious vehicle to embody fate and fortune. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses literary devices, such as foreshadowing, repetition, and symbolism, to show how the Montague/Capulet feud is a means by which the inevitability of fate functions and causes the bad fortune of the lovers. To start with, Shakespeare uses the prologue to foretell future events as a direct result of the feud.
In the first Act of A Midsummer Night's Dream, main characters are introduced in a way that sets the tone for the rest of the play. Egeus' first speech, found on lines 23 to 46, is a perfect example of this; through his speech themes of domination and control, and his accusatory themes, he affirms the accepted positions of power of his time. Language and grammar used here all give the reader an important first impression. Starting with the first line, Egeus states "Full of vexation come I". By placing the phrase "full of vexation" first, the vexation — vexation over the disobedience of his daughter — is emphasized.

Dramatic irony, which is when the audience knows more than the characters, occurs numerous times throughout the play and grabs the attention of the audience. Soliloquies, which are lengthy speeches by a character to project their thoughts and emotions to the audience, this allows the audience to be more attentive. Allusions are references by characters to well-known places, events from myths or other literature that cause the audience to be absorbed into the play. After reading this marvelous play, it is obvious that Shakespeare uses dramatic irony, allusions, and soliloquies all written in blank verse to grasp the undivided attention of the audience.
