Martin Luther King Jr. changed society forever. He was a civil rights activist who was also the leader of the Civil Rights Movement. King was a pacifist who believed in nonviolent protests. There were many protests he did. Among all these protests, there was one in particular that was very famous. It was the March on Washington. Leadership is defined by Merriam-Webster (n.d.) as a “capacity to lead”. This concise yet inexact definition demonstrates an inherent debate of what exactly leadership is, moreover the concept of what makes someone a good or bad leader. People’s interpretations of what makes someone a leader varies from person to person based on their own philosophical outlook. My philosophy on leadership leans heavily on Jocko Willink’s and Leif Babin’s book Extreme Ownership. Quoting Willink & Babin (2015), “… leadership requires finding the equilibrium in the dichotomy of many seemingly contradictory qualities between one extreme and another” (p. 274). Some of the contradictory qualities in the book I agree with the most include taking ownership while empowering subordinates, being attentive to details but not being obsessed, and being aggressive but not overbearing.
Martin Luther King Jr. was an American pastor, activist, and a leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He fought for equality and integration. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. He was against racism and believed that white and black people should be seen as equal instead of opposites. He won plenty of cases and therefore became a very popular civil rights leader of America. A whole lot of people came to hear his I Have a Dream speech. The I Have a Dream speech made people change their way of acting. Dr. King also wanted justice in the world. He explained how black were treated unfairly. He wanted to change that. He told people how to settle fights with no violence. He used speeches, statements, and boycotts to change America.
