Of Mice and Men was an excellent novel about two migrant workers traveling in Southern California, trying to make enough money to fulfill their dream of attaining their own plot of land. They have trouble accomplishing this goal when Lennie, the big and clueless on of the two, consistently makes mistakes, some of them being vital. The author, John Steinbeck, uses great techniques and literary devices that build up to the climax and resolution. Throughout the story, he describes how several characters all have/had dreams or goals, but none of them truly achieved those dreams. All of these literary devices, techniques, and the entire plot lead up to my thesis statement.
Many readers who have read, “Of Mice and Men,” have opposing opinions on if George did the right thing by killing Lennie. George thinks that it is best to kill Lennie himself instead of letting the mob get him. He takes Carlson’s gun and goes to Lennie to put him into his happy place, George then shoots him straight in the head. This scene has been very controversial on whether or not George had the right to kill him.
When George shot Lennie in the back of the head, he granted Lennie a kind and quick death. At the beginning of the book, Of Mice and Men, when the two boys are sitting by the fire the night before they reach the farm they're supposed to work on, George had told Lennie "Lennie-if you jus' happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come here an' hide in the brush"(Steinbeck 15). When George says, "..get in trouble like you always done before.." he infers that Lennie has gotten them in trouble before and he suspects that he will again.
George feels he has to kill Lennie himself because they were as close just like Candy and his dog. George did not want the other men shooting Lennie just like what happened to Candy's dog. But the biggest example was when George was telling Lennie what to do in case he ever gets in trouble. George told Lennie to go down in the brush and hide in case of trouble. The story says “...if you jus' happen to get in trouble like you always did before, I want you to come right here an' hide in the brush.”
" Pulling the trigger might have been a hard thing for George because killing Lennie would ruin their dreams this shows that George thought the best thing for lennie now was for him to die because he was already in so much trouble because of what he did in weed with the girl in the red dress and now he killed Curley 's wife so George didn 't want him to get himself into anymore problems so it was the best for him , this is why he killed Lennie it would be the best thing to do to not do anything more like hurting
The definition of a sympathetic character is one whom the writer expects the reader to identify with and care about, though not necessarily admire. In the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Curley’s wife, a main character in the book is blatantly portrayed as an unsympathetic character. This is because they only see her through the men's eyes, who only see her as a tiresome object, owned by her husband. Steinbeck’s portrayal of Curley’s wife is unfair and misogynistic because he only displays her as unintelligent and promiscuous, never has a character have a turning point where they realize she’s more than an object, and he never reveals her true name. The first reason that Steinbeck's portrayal of Curley’s wife is unfair is that he never gives Curley any redeeming personality traits, he only depicts her as unintelligent and promiscuous.
It does not directly state that George is doing this in order to end Lennies suffering like with Candy’s dog, it is implied that George shoots Lennie to end his suffering and to make his death
In the book Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck, I believe that George did make the right decision to shoot Lennie, because of the relationship that they had. Previously learning from the experience Candy had when he let someone else shoot his dog, George knew that shooting Lennie was his job to do. In chapter three Candy says "I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn 't ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog." , (John Steinbeck, 1973, p.58), this really impacted Georges decision on giving someone else the ability to shoot him.
Have you ever thought of killing your best friend? No, no one does, that person is supposed to be your everything. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, a main character gets killed by his best friend. George had no reason to kill Lennie. Lennie did not mean to kill them on purpose.
Lennie with his simple mind, always gets into trouble. This time, Lennie gets himself in a bind once again, that George can’t save him from. George decision to kill Lennie in the story, was due to his responsibility, sympathy, and love for Lennie. George’s decision to kill Lennie was out of sympathy for him.
Some people might think in the opposite side that George should not killed Lennie because Lennie did not mean to anything. He has done it without knowing how strong of himself. Lennie made many troubles this might be because of his disability, but this is the reason that he deserves to live. He has done many thing that make George get into trouble and It is better if Lennie has to die because of George shoot him not the other. "All the time he coulda had such a good time if it was not for you” (Steinbeck).
In the novella, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, George’s decision to kill Lennie at the end of the novel was justified. George and Lennie were best friends, and have been since they were little. They got ran out of Weed(the old farm they used to work at) for harassing a girl and not letting her go. He was just scared from her screaming and kicking. He didn’t mean to harm, or scare her.

In the end of Of Mice and Men, George shoots Lennie to save Lennie from torture from Curley. “George raised the gun and his hand shook, and he dropped his hand to the ground again. ”(Steinbeck, 52) This proves George didn’t want to shoot Lennie, but George had to. It was the only way for Lennie to be safe from future hurting and suffering.
