Did George Make The Right Decision To Shoot Lennie

The novel Of Mice and Men poses a moral dilemma; is murder ever justified? Should George have murdered Lennie? George should have killed Lennie because worse things would have awaited him if he went to trial. George felt justified in killing Lennie because he felt he was saving him from a worse things.

What could be so terrible about a book, that it has become one of the most frequently banned/challenged books? Of Mice and Men is a fictional book written by John Steinbeck in 1937. The book has been banned in many schools due to racism, profanity, foul language, violence, treatment of women, and for seemingly promoting euthanasia. This book is usually read by high school students around the age fourteen or fifteen, however many parents have gotten upset when hearing about what their kid was reading. Many parents have stated that this book is not age-appropriate and should not be read in school. However, in my opinion this book should not be banned.

At the end of “Of Mice and Men” George is faced with grim decision of shooting his best friend and family member Lennie to ease both of their future pains. George has known Lennie for mostly all of his life and he knew that when Lennie was dead their dream of having a house would be over. George then makes up his mind and shoots Lennie making him think if it was the right decision or it was wrong. In this case the decision was right because of many reasons with one being that Lennie would never be able to survive in the world that they live in. Lennie had low brains and high strength, allowing him to get far with George helping him. But, Lennie never knowing when he did something wrong only put him on a clock before he would end up dying for something he didn’t understand. “They run us outta weed,”(Steinbeck 7) this quote shows that already at the beginning of the book Lennie has

In Of Mice & Men John Steinbeck writes “‘Well, I can go away,’ said Lennie. ‘I’ll go right off in the hills an’ find a cave if you don’ want me’”(Steinbeck 104) In this quote Lennie talks about how he could just run away, and no one would have to deal with him again. He would not get hurt, he would not hurt anyone else, and everything would be ok. This shows that there are other options. George did not have to shoot Lennie, it was a choice. There was no place for mercy. Poor Lennie could have lived on and done what he had wanted, he could have just went and done his own thing without being harmed or anyone harming him, but George shot him and Lennie can not do any of those things.

However, George could have stood up for Lennie instead of killing him. There is other options other than immediately killing. Lennie was not very smart and George knew that, George was not thinking of Lennie he was thinking of himself. In the passage, Of Mice and Men, George says “He’s dumb as hell, but he ain’t crazy.” This shows that George knows that he is not stupid. George was his best friend and Lennie needed him.

After all the anger that George has shown towards Lennie, he utters these words now so Lennie can die with a sense of peace. George does not want to pull the trigger, but he knows that the further consequences of Lennie’s actions will only worsen. Throughout the book George calls Lennie a “crazy bastard”. Although, George uses foul language toward Lennie, his actions show his compassion and caring. George even contradicts some of his own put-downs towards Lennie as seen on when he compliments Lennie’s work ethic, saying, “he is a hell of a good worker and strong as a bull” (pg 22). Another argument that George is a bad friend to Lennie is the fact that George shot Lennie. It is true that George shot Lennie, but what some do not understand is why this occurred. George and Lennie had already run from one place because of Lennie’s actions, and now they had to be on the run again. The question arose that a life of running from bad things was not a life at all. Also, George knew that if the ranchers were to catch Lennie, they would kill him as revenge for killing Curley's wife.
