The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood among Ghosts by Maxine Hong Kingston, is a story of an American daughter of Chinese immigrants. The story in this book reflects on Kingston’s childhood memory of growing up among the ghosts that her mother tells her during her talk-story. There are many stories of ghosts that appear in several forms, both literally and figuratively, in each chapter. There are three primary ghosts that reflect Maxine’s struggle to find her identity while growing up in two different cultures, the traditional culture of her Chinese parents and the modern American culture. These ghosts are, “no name woman,” the sitting ghost, and the ghost of China.

In “House,” Lorraine’s mother deserts her family and, in “Alchemy,” Paula disappears. In “House” the mother abandons her daughters and creates in them a desperate longing to be reunited with her. The impact of her actions, particularly for Lorraine’s sister, Kathleen, is heart-wrenching. One morning Lorraine’s sister Kathleen awakens “choking and wheezing, her eyes wet with tears” (121). One of the most profoundly moving scenes in “House” is Thien’s depiction of two young girls waiting outside their former home on their mother’s birthday, hoping that she will return to them.

The idea of blocking everyone out helped Connie build her self-confidence. Esperanza finds growing up especially difficult when she realizes the teenage girls in her neighborhood experience abusive and controlling relationships. Sally’s father physically abuses her. Her father thinks she is “going to run away just like his sisters who made the family ashamed” (92). Sally tried to help herself by staying with Esperanza’s family , however , when her father came to the Cordero’s house with tears in his eyes, sally agreed to come home when he said “this is the last time” (93).

She doesn't like her dad that much because he got married to someone else, and sometimes he forgets to send Katie a birthday gift. Katie tried her best to stay strong, but it was tough for her. Witnessing my father chasing down my mother because of a pointless argument of my parents not caring about my siblings and I where abouts would be devastating to say the least. In The Glass Castle Jeannette and her siblings chose to appreciate the small things as they got older because they were not given materialistic items or a hot meal when they could afford it. Their mother made poor financial decisions and hardly ever put the kids first. For example, the mom chose to rent a piano over buying Brian a pair of male jeans. He had to suffer wearing girl clothes that did not even fit.

Throughout the book, one of the major conflicts that Lily has to face is her secrets. With her life controlled through them, her secrets and lies refrain her from living fulfillingly and puts a mental strain on her. It all started with a simple lie to a store clerk at Tiburon, “I’m visiting my grandmother” (62). Soon that simple lie escalated
