From chapters 19-21, Cycle 4, Shelby had received a phone call from the stalker. The phone called was then traced by the police and they found out that the call came from a public phone in the mall. The police checked the CCTV cameras and Shelby noticed it was his jacket and his hat, it was Eric Green. Later on, after Eric was in custody, Shelby went to a party and a person named Jason Puckett walked Shelby home, she noticed that Eric Green wasn’t the stalker, but Jason Puckett
“Prelude to a Revolution,” by Traci Brimhall is a short poem about a group of men currently in prison. They pass around items that will ease their nerves. They talk about rumors of a revolution, and other rumors of the city. They have spent a lot of time in prison and some of them are starting to lose their minds. Parts of the poem, I believe, give details of the prisoners past lives.
Stephen Ambrose, author of “Undaunted Courage,” uses several key points to describe his purpose in the fourth chapter of his book titled “Thomas Jefferson’s America.” He His uses 3 main points to get his purpose of persuading the reader across. The three main points he uses are: Language, people, and events. of language, people, and events is used to give the reader a sense of persuasion. But how exactly does Ambrose give these points across?
Ervin Beisch David W. Blight’s, “The Meaning of the Fight: Fredrick Douglas and the memory of the Fifty Fourth Massachusetts,” is an attempt to explain how the black population in the northern states, during the Civil War, fought not only for themselves but also fought o prove their value to the American people and to prove their manhood (Blight). Fredrick Douglas attempts to appeal to the colored populations encompassed both the art of acting and speech. The author wrote about how the black people, “Love their country, though rudely dealt by” (Blight), shows how he attempted to prove that this war was about all Americans and not just Americans that are white. The formation of the Fifty -Fourth was not the first all black regiment to fight but it was the first for the Massachusetts and northern area.
Politics. What does it do to us and our views of people? In “Divided We Now Stand,” Susan Page, the current Washington Bureau Chief for USA today, explains just that. She spends the article giving readers studies and insights as to how people oppose simply because the party says to oppose, and she shows us how people feel about opposing parties and treat them as a result of partisan views. In this article, Page has many good points and strategies, but her argument could be improved.
The book, “Where Am I Wearing?”, by Kelsey Timmerman tells the journey that Timmerman embarked on to discover where his clothes were made and who made them. He traveled to rare places like Honduras, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and China to talk to the people behind his clothing in an attempt to better understand globalization and to minimize the difference between small-scale and large-scale stories and processes. “Where Am I Wearing?”, connects themes from Geography 2750 such as population dynamics, urbanization, and economics through small-scale stories and puts emphasis on how they affect large-scale processes. In the book, Timmerman helps explain the themes of population dynamics on page 172 of his book.
The concept of an American Dream has been around for a long time. The way people live their lives should be based on their passions, but many times people form false passions around objects and money. In The Professor’s House, by Willa Cather, a situation is given of a man who lives in a society built up by a 1920s American chase for money and success. This way of life eventually leads the Professor to become dissatisfied with his life despite achieving the perceived elements of success in 1920 America. Cather provides a solution to the problem the Professor faces inside the character Tom Outland.
The Body Silent, by Robert Murphy, was published in 1987. The story is about Murphy’s personal account of the physical and social changes he underwent after becoming a quadriplegic. Robert Murphy was an anthropologist at Columbia University. In his early career, he spent a year observing indigenous tribes in the Amazon with his wife. In 1972, Murphy experienced a muscle spasm that was later realized to be a symptom of a growing tumor in his spinal column stretching from the C2 vertebra to the T8 vertebra, leading to partial paralysis; he underwent a few surgeries to reduce the size of the tumor, but eventually his paralysis spread until he was fully quadriplegic in 1986.
In Chapter 9-14 Holden Caulfield leaves Penecy Prep and heads to New York City. Where he will stay for a couple days before winter vacation starts and he will head home. Delaying breaking the news to his family he got kicked out of school for as long as possible. These chapters are where Holden’s loneliness becomes abundantly clear. The reader is subjected to many long rants by Holden about the company he wants, though he attempts to settle several times.
Imagine being a 17 year old African American kid always being judged just because of his skin color. Everywhere you go you feel like all eyes are on you, especially when you go to a school that only has eight black kids. That's exactly how Justyce McAllister felt in Dear Martin by Nic Stone. In the book, the main character Justyce goes through a lot of conflict involving his skin color. Even though he has a full scholarship at Braselton Preparatory Academy, and is a very smart student, he still gets judged.
Lucille Parkinson McCarthy, author of the article, “A Stranger in Strange Lands: A College Student Writing Across the Curriculum”, conducted an experiment that followed one student over a twenty-one month period, through three separate college classes to record his behavioral changes in response to each of the class’s differences in their writing expectations. The purpose was to provide both student and professor a better understanding of the difficulties a student faces while adjusting to the different social and academic settings of each class. McCarthy chose to enter her study without any sort of hypothesis, therefore allowing herself an opportunity to better understand how each writing assignment related to the class specifically and “what
The significance of Kincaid’s title “The Estrangement” is to describe her deteriorating relationship with her mother. In the story, Kincaid explains how she stopped talking to her mother a few years before she died because she always made her feel like her accomplishments weren't good enough. Estrangement is the fact of no longer being on friendly terms or part of a social group and during the story Kincaid looked at her mother as a hero; but eventually developed resentment. For example, in the first sentence of the essay Kincaid said “ three years before my mother died, I decided not to speak to her again”.
In Tobias Wolff’s short story “The Liar,” the protagonist, James, lies to help him construct a new identity outside of his family. James tells morbid lies about his mother in order to distance himself from her. Since, the loss of his father, James no longer associates with people who are like him. The lies started after his father’s death and his mother starts noticing how much differently he was acting. Since his mother is treating him like she is disappointed in him, James begins to devolve into a state of repressed bitterness.

Holden Caulfield lives his life as an outsider to his society, because of this any we (as a reader) find normal is a phony to him. Basically, every breathing thing in The Catcher in the Rye is a phony expect a select few, like Jane Gallagher. What is a phony to Holden and why is he obsessed with them? A phony is anyone who Holden feels is that living their authentic life, like D.B. (his older brother). Or simply anyone who fits into society norms, for example, Sally Hayes.
