In chapter 6 I learned more on how social influence impacts our everyday relations. There are three levels of social influence and they are by conformity, compliance and obedience. The first section talks about conformity, and it is the lowest level because we voluntarily adapt our behavior to match others. Now there are two variations or reasons outlined by the book to conform to those around us and they are “normative social influence,” and “informational social influence”. The former is our response to feel a greater sense of belonging in the group while the second deals more with us trying to be right by sometimes going with what others say to be right too. The second section is compliance, and is also coincidentally the second level.

I personally enjoyed every chapter that we have learned to date. If I had to pick my favorites, I would choose chapter seven and thirteen. I found these the most interesting because I enjoy learning about the brain itself, how memory works, and the disorders that occur. I find that the brain is the most unique aspect of the human body. Each brain holds millions of memories and ideas that are special to each person, and I find that beautiful.
Chapter seven covers the list of black psychologists who broke barriers and help paved a way to inspire other black people to achieve their dreams. It also covered the achievement about black scholars at Howard University who majored in the field of psychology. This chapter became one of my favorites out of the book because it highlighted all the excellence that black people work hard for to get where they are so that we can have a better for life for ourselves. After I read chapter seven, I felt very inspired by some of the people that were highlighted like Charles Henry Thompson because it motivated me to graduate college and get my bachelor’s degree in psychology so that I can be able to pursue my career. Reading about all the achievements of black psychologists in the chapter was the standout moment for me because if it wasn’t for those people I wouldn’t be the man who I am today.

4.1 “just do it”. I spend majority of my time just thinking about how I am going to get the assignment done. By the time I start the assignment it feels like I been working on it forever, when in reality I just started. When am given an assignment I need to work on it as soon as I find free time. “to eat an elephant, first cut it into same pieces”.
Chapter 1 covers the definition of psychology and brief history of psychology. I learned that psychology is the study of the way people think, feel and behave. The goals of psychology are to describe behavior, explained, and predicted to control the behavior or change it. They are many types of psychological perspectives.
Death. While the outcome is the same for everyone, no two people live the same lives. Ivan Ilych was a character in Leo Tolstoy 's novel The Death of Ivan Ilych. Ivan was a selfish lawer who was unhappy with his life until right before he died. Portrayed in the movie Into the Wild, Christopher McCandless was a free spirit he did what he want when he wanted.
Jenness (1932) found that when experiment participants carried out the task in a group, they reported estimates of roughly same value even though they had previously quoted different estimates as individuals. Jenness’ study revealed the impact of majority influence, and established a direct correlation between a group influence on an individual’s behaviour and beliefs especially when participants are uncertain about the actual number of beans in the jar. Another classical study on conformity was based on finding out how social norms are developed in social groups and how the influences of these norms when developed impact on an individual’s behaviour. The Autokinetic phenomenon study of Sherif (1937) according to Baron et al. (2008, p.277), illustrated vividly the impact of private acceptance of social influence.
A Psychological Analysis of Forrest Gump. The movie Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks) tells a story of a simple man and his journey through life. Forrest Gump’s story takes place during a time of historical significance in our country, The United States of America. His story began in the 1950’s, and ran through the 1970’s.
It has often been considered what impact social power and status have on an individuals’ level of obedience. Obedience can be defined as a compliance to commands given by a person in order to avoid punishment. Such a response occurs in situations where individuals adjust their behaviour in recognition of social influence from others. Throughout the 1950’s, social psychologist Stanley Milgram became interested in Solomon Asch’s studies of conformity and the capacity of an individual to be influenced by group pressure.

To understand social obedience, we first must look into the concept of conformity. “Conformity is the change of actions or attitudes caused by the pressure from some real or notional groups” (Song, Ma, Wu, & Li, 2012, p. 1365). In most instances of conformity, it comes from rational refection, but there’s always a possibility for irrational conformity. Rational conformity is when a person’s behavior is guided by reasonable thinking or judgment. “It occurs as a result of the influences exerted by the object’s behavior or attitude and includes abidance, compliance, and obedience” (Song, Ma, Wu, & Li, 2012, p. 1366).
"Your circle of influence dictates your path"-Jon Bielecki. During specific events, a person’s mindset can be influenced by the people around them. Everyday the social environment of a person affects the outcomes of their decisions and the direction of their life is essentially chosen by society. Each one person has their own persona that dominates another person or group’s life and judgment on certain topics. For example, everyone chooses the people they hang out with and in return their behavior immensely impacts everything the other does.
